Xavier’s Institute has been turned into Graymalkin Prison, run by the brutal Dr. Corina Ellis, and home to Lawrence Trask’sSentinel program reboot. Trask, a mutant and son of the Sentinels' creator Bolivar Trask, claims to be wracked by visions of the end of the world, caused by specific mutants. His new Sentinels are meant to only collect these “bad” mutants, but when it comes to anyone rounding up a marginalized group, those are famous last words. Of course, the matter isfurther complicated by Professor X’s current imprisonment in his former home, as well.

Cyclops and Rogue were already on thin ice since the start of these two series.Cyclops is trying to recreate the X-Men, an army of superheroes out to save the world.Rogue, however, wants nothing to do with him, as she, Gambit, Jubilee, and Wolverine have said they’re done with being anyone’s soldier. The two leaders had a tense phone call in the pages ofX-Men#3 andUncanny X-Men#2, which had Scott calling Rogue’s group “pigheaded,” and looking to divert her already-planned trip to the mutant prison at their old home.

The solicitation for the crossover describes this arc as “solidifying” the new paradigm – suggesting that…the true grand scheme for the era is only just beginning to take shape.
