DC’s Absolute Universe has reimagined the publisher’s most iconic characters in bold and unexpected ways, butKelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman’sAbsolute Wonder Woman#5 takes it even further.

This issue strips Diana of her legendary mantle, transforming her entirely—both in name and appearance—into Medusa, the snake-haired gorgon of Greek mythology. This drastic change is her last-ditch effort to finally defeat the seemingly unkillable Tetracide. But how did Wonder Woman become the most proficient killer in fiction? The answer lies in her lasso.

InAbsolute Wonder Woman#5, a flashback takes readers to the Wild Isle of Hell, where Diana meets with her mother—Circe. During this scene, Circe presents Diana with a unique version of Earth-Prime Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth:the Nemesis Lasso, also called Sacrifice in Greek.Circe reveals that this powerful weapon holds the ability to transform anything it binds. This revelation sets the stage for the present-day battle, where Diana prepares to face the unstoppable Tetracide. In a defining moment, she wraps the lasso around herself—triggering a transformation into Medusa.

As the Lasso tightens around her, Diana speaks her intent, declaring, “I am become her. She who is both terrible and tragic. Cursing and cursed. This mantle must I accept today, for a far greater good. For now… I am become doom… I am Medusa. And none that see my face shall live.”Sherman’s artwork then brings this transformation to life, depicting Diana as a towering, skyscraper-sized gorgon covered in green scales, with writhing serpents for hairand her lasso wrapped tightly around her left bicep. This is easily one of Diana’s most epic and hardcore forms—one she embraces with the explicit intent to kill.

DC’s New Wonder Woman Just Gave Me My Motto for 2025, Making Me More Hopeful Than Ever

I was already in love with Kelly Thompson & Hayden Sherman’s Absolute Wonder Woman, but I never expected to find my motto for 2025 within its pages.

Wonder Woman Is Officially More Overpowered Than Ever Before

Diana’s transformation into Medusa speaks volumes about AbsoluteWonder Woman’s power levels. The fact that this version wields a lasso capable of inducing such powerful transformations is an ability unmatched by her Earth-Prime counterpart. Furthermore, the Nemesis Lasso not only reshapes reality but also judges the sins of those it binds, delivering pain equal to their transgressions. With such overwhelming abilities, the Nemesis Lasso makes Diana’s original weapon seem almost insignificant by comparison.

However, what truly cements this Absolute Wonder Woman as the most overpowered iteration of the character goes beyond just the Nemesis Lasso. So far, this version of Diana retains all the powers and abilities of her Earth-Prime counterpart, including her Amazonian superhuman strength and even her more niche abilities, like communicating with animals. But in addition to these, she is also a witch, wielding formidable magic alongside her warrior prowess. And now, with the debut of her Medusa form, it’s undeniable—Absolute Diana is the most powerful version of Wonder Woman to date.

Beyond her immense power, Wonder Woman’s Medusa form also reinforces just how vitalSteve Trevor remains to her character, even in this universe. One of the greatest risks of Diana embracing this transformation was the possibility that she might never return from it—a fear that became reality when, after turning the Tetracide to stone, she began prowling the streets in search of her next victim. However, Steve was the one who ultimately pulled her back, allowing Diana to reclaim her true self. In doing so, he proved once again that he is one ofWonder Woman’sstrongest connections to humanity.
