Even with the Chaplain chastising Titus at every possible chance, it’s hard not to stop and listen to his captivating motivational sermons. Often seen with a pack of Ultramarines kneeling at attention, players can eavesdrop on these speeches on the battle barge or the makeshift church on Demerium during certain campaign missions. Going above and beyond his duties,Space Marine 2’s Chaplain is always close behind Titus, reminding the Ultramarines of their oaths while prepared to take action should any of his suspicions become a reality.

What Is The Role Of The Chaplain In Space Marine 2

A Critical Member Of The Imperium’s Inquisition

A Chaplain is an essential member of any successful Space Marine company, acting as a spiritual leader to boost morale while watching for any signs of corruption within their ranks. It’s incredibly easy to spot a Chaplain from a crowd of Space Marines thanks to their pitch-black armor emblazoned with skull iconography, exuding an intimidating aura to anyone in their presence. Bolstering the hearts of their fellow Space Marines, a Chaplain is the first line of defense againstWarhammer 40K’s Chaos Godsor other heretical influences on the battlefield.

Chaplains don’t just lead sermons from the safety of a chapel but lead their legions of Space Marine followers on the frontlines of battle, boasting fierce and unwavering combat efficiency. Being dedicated in their efforts to spread the Emperor’s will, much of their armor decoration is meant to invoke feelings of mortality, giving way to the idea of eternal life in service to the Imperium. While players sadly don’t get to witness the Chaplain’s fighting prowess during the campaign,Space Marine 2’s endinghints they might have a chance in the future.

The Secret Identity Of Space Marine 2’s Chaplain

A Long-Held Grudge Spanning Two Hundred Years

After successfully slaying Imurah and repelling the hordes of Chaos, players are rewarded with learning the secret identity of the Ultramarines' Chaplain. Serving under the codename Quintus, the Chaplain is theruthless and reviled Leandrosreturning from the firstSpace Marinegame, watching Titus and his every move from the very start ofSpace Marine 2’sstory. Once serving as a subordinate to Titus, Leandros betrayed his trust by reporting him to the Inquisition under suspicion of Chaos corruption, directly causing him to be stripped of his rank and punished for nearly two hundred years.

Without the intervention of Chapter Master Calgard, Leandros would likely have left Titus to die on the battlefield after the tutorial mission.

Relenting that Titus has successfully proven himself in the eyes of his battle brothers and the Ultramarine chapter,Leandros still threatens to take down Titus should he suspect the slightest hint of corruption from Chaos. Given Titus' unnaturally powerful resistance to Chaos, the Chaplain isn’t the only one bearing down suspicions against him, as his squadmate Galadriel goes through the same motions of mistrust as Leandros had in the firstSpace Marine. Despite initially causing the same rift in his squad from his lack of transparency, Titus learns to open himself up to hisnew and improved team, regaining their trust to develop an even stronger bond between them.

A Personal Grudge That Won’t Die Easily

A New Direction For Potential Space Marine DLC

Leandros makes it clear in the finale thatno matter what Titus and his Ultramarines achieve, there’s likely nothing players can do to fully clear the traitorous suspicion of his former comrade. Despite this broken relationship, Titus has shown he’s capable of growing as a person rather than just a skilled fighter after fixing his fractured relationship with Galadriel throughout the game. While it would take a lot of work, there’s still the chance that Titus may be able to make amends in some way with this old enemy in a future story DLC.

How Much DLC Is Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Going To Get?

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has several paid DLCs and free updates planned for 2024 and 2025. Here’s what’s in store for the next year.

If the cliffhanger ending ofWarhammer 40,000:Space Marine 2is anything to go by, players may receive a future story expansion or potentially even a sequel that will delve further into the relationship of the two titular characters. The long history between Leandros and Titus would make for a unique blend of begrudging respect and animosity on the battlefield, further developing their long-standing relationship. While both Space Marines will have to restrain themselves from being at each other’s throats in the presence of their Chapter Master, there are more pressing threats in the galaxy at large than their grudges.
