Almost throughout its runtime,The Bondsmandoes not reveal why Kevin Bacon’s Hub was sent to hell after he died, making it hard not to wonder whether he deserved his hellish fate.The Bondsmanbegins with a bounty hunter, Hub, having a face-off with a group of men. Despite his best efforts to fight back, one of the men overpowers him and slashes his throat. However, to Hub’s surprise, he somehow ends up defying death, and his fatal wounds magically heal.
As theKevin Bacon horror-comedy showprogresses, Hub learns that he was destined to go to hell after he was murdered. He only returned to the human realm after his death because the devil spared him. Hub tries to defend himself by claiming that the devil might have made a mistake by sending him down to hell. He assures his mother that he never did anything to deserve a place in the underworld. He arranged a meeting with him at a bar one day, but instead of settling things peacefully, he confronted him, claiming that people like him never change. Believing that he was doing his wife a favor, Hub set out to kill Lucky the same night after getting drunk.

In his intoxicated state, he believed he saw Lucky after spotting a bartender, Sheryl, from a distance in Lucky’s hat. Sheryl died on the spot, but instead of reporting the crime to law enforcement, Hub hid her body and tried to get away with the murder. This confirms that Hub had committed a major sin by killing an innocent. Therefore, he chooses the comfort of lies and denial by claiming he never did anything wrong. He later learns that he has been tied into an organization called Pot O’Gold, which is run by the devil. By reviving him and allowing him to stay out of hell, the devil has done him a favor. In return, the satanic figure expects him to fulfill a role in Pot O’Gold.

InThe Bondsman’s ending, Hub sets out on his final mission to capture a demon named Lilith with Midge’s help. Although overpowering Lilith proves challenging, Hub eventually finds a way to do it. However, before he can send her back to hell, Lilith makes him an offer:she promises to revive the woman he had killed and even assures him that she will reverse his deal with the devil if he spares her. Instead of realizing how Lilith could potentially destroy the human realm, Hub surrenders to her deal and sets her free.
Although Lilith initially keeps her side of the deal and frees Hub from the devil’s grasp, she eventually shows her true colors. After being set free, Lilith possesses Hub’s wife, Maryanne. BeforeThe Bondsmanseason 1’s credits start rolling, Lilith reveals that even though she has upturned his hellish fate, the devil will not let him off so easily. She also threatens to harm his wife and the entire human race if he does not agree to help fight the devil. With this, even though Hub frees himself from the devil’s deal, he ends up falling prey to another supernatural figure.
