Melissa Fumero explains why a revival ofBrooklyn Nine-Nineis unlikely to happen. Fumero played Amy Santiago, a main character in the workplace sitcom police procedural about NYPD’s Jake Peralta and his team at the police station. In addition to Fumero,Brooklyn Nine-Ninefeatured a leading castincluding Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Andre Braugher, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller.Brooklyn Nine-Nineran for eight seasons from 2013 to 2021. Despite it concluding, some have been urging for the series to be revived.

In an exclusive interview withScreen RantforBased on a True Storyseason 2,Fumero explains why a revival ofBrooklyn Nine-Nineis unlikely. According to the actor, this idea has been brought up already among the cast and crew, who “miss spending [their] days together.” She says the biggest thing holding them back, though, is thatthey “don’t think [they] could ever do it, though, without Andre.“Even in the absence of the police sitcom, theBrooklyn Nine-Nineteam has tried various “ways to work together again.” Check out the full quote from Fumero below:

Captain Holt trying a marshmallow in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode Mr. Santiago

Oh gosh. We’ve definitely all played with the idea, and we definitely all miss each other so much, and miss spending our days together. I don’t think we could ever do it, though, without Andre, so I don’t know that that would happen, but, yeah. I hope to work in other things with everyone. Stephanie and I have a podcast together now, and I think we’ll just always be looking for ways to work together again.

What This Means For Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Will Probably Not Return

Fumero is referring to Braugher, who played Raymond Holt on the series.Braugher tragically passed away from lung canceron June 14, 2025, two years after the show’s conclusion. With the kind of cast closeness that Fumero describes, a loss like this hits especially hard. This means that ifBrooklyn Nine-Ninewere to return, they would likely be down a main character, as the team seems to have a reverence for Braugher that would make them not want to replace his role with another actor.

As a result, it seems likeBrooklyn Nine-Nineis not getting a revival any time soon. Besides these emotional roadblocks, another barrier in the way ofBrooklyn Nine-Ninereturning is the fact that the actors have all gotten busy since the conclusion of the series. Beatriz was just in theNetflix showA Man on the Inside, and Fumero has been in bothVelmaandBased on a True Story. If the show were to come back in any capacity, it might have to be in the form of a spinoff based on what actors' availability is.

Captain Holt Was Critical To The Series

While Fumero’s statement might be disappointing for the biggest advocates of aBrooklyn Nine-Ninereturn, it is an understandable position for the cast to be in. Frankly,Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Captain Holtwas critical to the heart and soul of the series, so it is hard to imagine a revival without him anyway. Though he started a bit more standoffish, he came to be one of the most lovable characters of the show across a multi-season arc. Any attempt to replicate this kind of character growth could work, diminishing the strength of the originalBrooklyn Nine-Nine.

Cast

From the creative minds of Dan Goor and Michael Schur comes Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a police comedy series set in the NYPD’s fictional 99th precinct. Headed by the comedically serious Captain Raymond Holt and protagonist Jake Peralta, the detectives of the 99 deal with burglaries, drug deals, and oddities in New York City, occasionally steering into real-world issues surrounding police perception and social concerns in the 2010s and earlier. Each detective has their own unique personality that makes them stand out, creating endearing dynamics that helped the show thrive for eight seasons.
