Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2has not been out long, but with the scale of opportunities aWarhammergame provides, the talk of possible DLCs is already rampant. From new game modes for PvE to more maps for PvP, there is something that can be brought to the game for everyone. There were conversations about the lack ofcosmetic options for the Chaos Space Marinesin PvP in comparison with the Astartes, which led to the idea that theChaos Space Marines may be being saved for another purpose.

The Heretic Astartes may be traitors, but they are still dubbed Marines across the galaxy. Their role inSpace Marine 2could be more than just faceless troops to fight the overly designed Space Marines in PvP or the antagonistic enemy units in the game’s story missions. Their inclusion in the game alongside the Tyranids changed the basic bug-bashing gameplay into a conflict of ideology. There is no better Legion to clash ideologically against the Ultramarines than the Word Bearers, and so there is no better Legion for players to control in future DLC.

Word Bearers DLC Would Be Perfect For Space Marine 2

Ultramarines Despite The Word Bearers

There are three major events that instigated the seething hatred between the Ultramarines and Word Bearers. The first is the infamous Horus Heresy, the civil war where the Space Marine Legions turned on the Emperor. The Word Bearers were one of the first to align with Chaos and lead the Legions against the Ultramarine homeworld. This started the unending hatred between them. There was also the Siege of Calth. The Word Bearers' treachery was even more egregious as it occurred during a time of relative peace between foes.

One Easily-Missed Space Marine 2 Detail Shows The Dev’s Dedication To The Source Material

The brave soldiers fighting alongside the player’s Space Marines have more backstory than they let on, proving the developers commitment to the lore.

The Archenemy’s existence is considered an affront to the Imperium, but the clash between Ultramarines and Word Bearers is particularly prominent and would serve as the perfect counter to Titus' story inSpace Marine 2’s main game. The inclusion of Tyranid but also Chaos forces gives Saber Interactive a window to utilize more of the lore and see more aspects of the game’s story inPvE Operations through the eyes of Chaos, rather than another Space Marine Chapter.

The Word Bearers Lack Of Appearance In PvP Could Be A Hint

So Little Chaos Cosmetic Is Curious In General

Whilst the Space Marine PvP faction is abundantwith cosmetics customization, the Chaos side is severely lacking, offering only a handful of color alterations and heraldry for a select group of Legions. This could be because Saber Interactive wanted to introduce PvP and included the Chaos Marines in a rush just to ensure they had no opposing sides to fight, but it could also be the foundation for future DLC. Having the Legions have their own story and then include pages worth of cosmetics would put them on the same level as the Space Marines.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2currently has cosmetic heraldic coloring for Alpha Legion, Black Legion, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, World Eaters, and Death Guard of the Heretic Astartes.

What is more intriguing is the complete lack of the Word Bearers as even a color option in PvP. Considering their importance in the lore and conflict with the Ultramarines, the main Chapter of the game, a player would expect to be able to paint their Chaos Marine in the Word Bearers colors when fighting them. This lack of inclusion of the Word BearersinWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2could be foreshadowing within itself that they will make a later but far grander appearance in the game, bringing their own Operation missions with them.
