Twisters Cast & Character Guide

The 1996 disaster movie Twister featured some famous names, but the upcoming sequel is ready to rival it with an impressive ensemble cast.

Screen Rantcaught up with Brandon Pereato talk aboutTwistersin celebration of the upcoming home release. He revealed what he was most afraid of when he signed on forTwistersand how the cast bonded off-camera, which translated to chemistry in the movie. Perea also shared insight into the filmmaking process and reflected on a terrifying moment on set during the filming process.

Brandon Perea Details His Craziest Twisters Filming Experiences

Screen Rant:Twistersis such an iconic film. I mean, the originalTwisteris such an iconic film too. Really one of the best disaster movies ever created. This follows right in those footsteps. What is something you learned about tornadoes that you didn’t know before?

Brandon Perea: Ooh, one thing I learned is the wind direction of the circular motion starts from the ground to meet the sky. That’s something I learned. I hope I said that right. But yeah, I just didn’t know. I thought it would always just come only down, but I didn’t know that it starts from low as well, where the wind can circle and scoop up.

Well, you guys had to go to a boot camp to learn all this stuff, right?

Brandon Perea: Yeah. Meteorology bootcamp.

Do you think you could be a weatherman at this point though?

Brandon Perea: No. For sure. Yeah, no.

Now I know that the last time we spoke, you said that there was a lot of crazy experiences because you guys were shooting in tornado season during the time. Can you talk about one of the crazier experiences you experienced on set with twisters?

Brandon Perea: Oh man. There was a moment where we had lightning delay, so everyone has to take cover and go inside. So there was a point where I was in my trailer and I’m looking at the weather map that I have and I’m seeing this massive storm on the map.

And then I start feeling my trailer shake really bad. It wasn’t like a little subtle, it was like I was like, dude, am I about to tip over? And I start texting production being like, Hey, is there actually a tornado because I’m not going to leave my trailer, but what’s protocol right now? Because I feel like I’m about to die. But it was all safe at the end of the day. But our sets got blown apart.

Brandon Perea Shares His Jean Jacket Theory From Nope

That’s wild. Now, one thing I love about home entertainment releases. So with these films, if you had to choose another film to pair to do a double feature at home, not including the firstTwister, what would you pair withTwisters?

Oh, good answer. There you go.

Brandon Perea: Nope and Twisters!

What’s the craziest fan theory you’ve ever heard aboutNope? I got some myself, but what’s the craziest?

Philip Seymour Hoffman looking goofy in a crowd of people in Twister

Brandon Perea: Dude, I did one press thing where it was with me, Daniel, Kiki, Steven and Jordan, and there was some crazy theories in there. It was prior to the release and I think I was reading some fanfiction today too, of just people trying to break down the Gordy scene and it’s hilarious. There’s so many different things, but my theory is where’s Jean Jacket’s family members?

I think Jean Jacket could be an actual real angel because there’s that bible verse in the quote in beginning that we talk about this stuff, but I think it’s an actual angel that’s kind of prophesized. That’s just my fan theory out there.

Brandon Perea: This Angel is killing people, man. It’s a monster. Who’s a good angel? We have a demon. Jean Jacket’s a demon!

Brandon Perea Teases An Incredible Twisters Deleted Scene

“I think our creation process of a tornado should be on there.”

That’s a good point. Well, look back toTwisters. I love home releases because I almost feel like it’s a little bit of going to film school. You get to learn about the behind-the-scenes process. What features are you expecting to be on the home entertainment release?

Brandon Perea: I think our creation process of a tornado should be on there. Blooper stuff is hilarious. We had a blast making the movie. It’s a fun movie. We had a fun group of people and everyone was just having a ball while we were making it, and there’s times where we’re just really goofing off during serious moments.

And yeah, there’s some hilarious behind the scenes and also some deleted scenes too. I have one of the deleted scenes and I’m so proud that it’s in there and you have to watch it at home, but it’s an incredible scene. I love it. I’m sad it didn’t make the final, but I’m so glad that it’s seeing the light of day. I thought I was never going to be able to see it.

Oh, that’s incredible. That’s the great thing about these home entertainment releases. Now, I was talking to Katie O’Brien at Comic-Con and I see that your cast forTwisterswas very, very close. You guys were cheering each other on, rooting each other on. Can you talk about the camaraderie that you guys built on-camera and off-camera together?

Brandon Perea: For sure, yeah. I mean, we had so much fun on set, of course, but what was great about filming in Oklahoma too, we were in OKC, but it was all in close quarters. So everyone’s eating at the same restaurants, everyone’s going to the same movie theater. Every time you’re walking somewhere, you run into someone in the cast and it’s like, what are you doing? Not much. You want to hang out? Yeah, sure.

So we all got to naturally hang out. We weren’t filming in Los Angeles where everyone can just go home and get to their normal lives. It was like we’re either at the hotel or we’re kicking it, so what’s up? So yeah, I think that was cool to bond there so we could bring it to set and then just have fun. We had so much trust from Lee Isaac Chung too, the director, to just trust us to go balls to the wall.

How Brandon Perea Handled The Pressure Of Living Up To Twister

“My fear was following up Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance.”

I want to talk about Lee Isaac Chung for a second because one of the things that he spoke about was how intimidated he was taking on a project like this. One big part about this movie is running towards your fears. So how did you run towards your fears in this film?

Brandon Perea: My fear was following up Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance because yeah, I remember when I first read the script, I didn’t know which role I was going for and then I saw this Boon guy and I was laughing at his lines. And then I remember just thinking, Oh, the poor bastard who has to play him? That’s a lot of weight to carry.

And then cut to a few weeks later, I get offered the Boon roll and I was like, Oh my god, I’m the poor bastard. It’s me. I got to carry the weight. Dang it. So you’re carrying on the weight of a legacy and then a legacy actor. That’s one of the greatest of all time. And yeah, I just wanted to give some sort of fun energy, a little tiny bit of what Philip Seymour Hoffman gave, and I hope I did somewhat justice. It’s a lot of weight to bear.

It’s crazy because a lot of your cast members, Katie O’Brien, she was inAnt-Man and the Wasp Quantumania. You got Glen Powell, who’s been fancast is almost every superhero under the sun. We’ve heard his comments about wanting to possibly have a different take on Batman. David Corenswet got the role of Superman when he was working with you guys. If a superhero comes your way, which one are you putting your energy out there for?

Brandon Perea: I will say I learned a lot from my Nope press stuff, right? I’m not going to fight for any character. Whoever sees me as a character, cool, I’ll do it. I believe in my abilities as an actor. I’ve been showcasing my abilities as an actor and I have crazy abilities outside of acting when it comes to the stunt world. I’ve showcased it and now not going to be begging for any role.

Whoever can see it and you see the vision, I’m telling you, you’ll get the best version of myself and you’ll seem like a genius. So there’s no universe I’m fighting towards anything anymore, whatever, leaving it to God and to the people that are willing to believe in me and have faith based off of what I’ve been able to showcase. Man, I’m telling you, I’ll go crazy. You know what I’m saying? I would go ballistic, but I’m not asking for it. It’s out there.

Brandon Perea Reminisce About The Shenanigans The Twisters Cast Got Up To On Set

“We are cracking up during our own bits.”

Another thing I love about home entertainment releases is audio commentary. What’s your favorite DVD commentary? What did you learn the most from any DVD commentary out there?

Brandon Perea: I think there’s just the fun behind filmmaking. I think outside perspective of it, you just never know what’s going on. Even in Twisters, right? There’s some serious moments that we’re dealing with, but in the in betweens of takes, we’re cracking up.

We are cracking up during our own bits. And then it’s like, Alright guys, guys tie it together. We got to get serious. Alright guys? But then as soon as one person looks in lock’s eyes, it’s like, You mother flower, don’t you air right now? We’re shooting on film. We can’t waste a take. But yeah, I think just how much fun. I think that’s what’s cool about learning from it.

Now last question I have for you is I’m so happy I got to experience this movie in an imax screen. I felt like I was in the movie. For real, you feel like you’re immersed in the film when you’re shooting these crazy epic, giant disaster scenes. Can you talk about what’s going on on set? Can you share any fun stories behind that?

Brandon Perea: We got big jet engine fans blowing at us, and then we have dirt being thrown at us from the fan. And then we have someone with a rocket full of ice. So he is launching ice at us, and then we have the rain going down and we are in the middle of Oklahoma on the field.

So that’s just to create the feeling. So I call it controlled chaos because it’s a chaotic moment, but it’s in a controlled environment. And yeah, it was just cool to, I’m glad and grateful for production that they really wanted to make the actors feel like we are in chaos.
