The intriguing plot holes of the first book and movie in theHarry Potterseries imply thatthe mysterious Albus Dumbledoremay not be as nice as he seems. Dumbledore was masterfully portrayed by both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, and they communicated the complexity of Dumbledore’s psychology, which helps to make the intrigue behind the plot holes incredibly real. Based on J.K. Rowling’s book series, theHarry Pottermovies created an Albus Dumbledore who was simultaneously enigmatic, wise, and threatening. In both the books and movies, this great character often moved me to awe and anger.

I always knew that Albus Dumbledore was planning something inHarry Potter, but it was only as the series went on that I started to see what. As all became clearer, I started to suspect that what I had perceived as plot holes in former books may not have been plot holes at all and may have been complex storytelling on Rowling’s part. This is hard to resolve, with Rowling never speaking out on the issue. However, there are many clues in theHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stonemovieand book to suggest answers. Dumbledore is complex and maddening, no matter what the case may be.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2: Ending Explained

Ending eight movies of the Harry Potter franchise, The Deathly Hallows Part 2 final scenes bring closure and meaning to the story.

Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone’s Ending Is Full Of Plot Holes

The First Movie Doesn’t Completely Make Sense

I see plenty of plot holes inHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, especially regarding the way the Sorcerer’s Stone was guarded.Gryffindor’s Golden Trio- Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger - were presented with a locked door on their way to retrieve the Sorcerer’s Stone. They had to find a way to retrieve the key. Firstly, I see no real reason for the key to be available so close to the door. The key could have been stowed away somewhere far from the door, for safekeeping. Secondly, there didn’t have to be a broom available to facilitate the retrieval of the key.

There’s 1 Way HBO’s Harry Potter Remake Can Make Philosopher’s Stone & Chamber Of Secrets So Much Better

HBO’s Harry Potter TV remake will have a hard time improving on the Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets movies, but there is a way it could.

This whole task was surprisingly easy for three first-year Hogwarts students, one of whom was very good at Quidditch, and therefore good with a broom. I was also surprised that a task that required Ron’s chess skills presented itself to the Golden Trio. Not to mention, there was no need for there to be an exit from the area containing the Potions challenge. It was easy enough for the Golden Trio, and Quirrel, to slip past this obstacle. I always thought that theHogwarts staff could have thought of numerous other ways to keep senior, gifted witches and wizards away from the stone, protecting it more securely.

The Stone’s Protections Only Make Sense If Dumbledore Wanted Quirrell To Reach It

There Was A Certain Logic To The Stone’s Protection

It is true thatDumbledore and the Hogwarts staffcould have genuinely set up the protection of the Sorcerer’s Stone with no ulterior motive, but the whole story makes a lot more sense to me ifDumbledore intended for the tasks to be manageable. The plot holes relating to the protection of the Sorcerer’s Stone disappear if you accept that Dumbledore set the tasks to allow the Golden Trio and Quirrel to access the stone, leading Harry and Quirrel to meet. I think that J.K. Rowling deliberately left this as a possibility for adult readers to ponder. I’m impressed with this storytelling and angry with Dumbledore.

It seems very much like the pursuit of the Stone was a series of tests set up by Dumbledore.

The stone’s protection could have presented challenging tasks for many attempting to reach it. However, for the most part, it looks as if the tasks were made easy enough to be completed by students while testing their abilities. Significantly, I thinkthe Hogwarts headmasterwanted Quirrel to reach the Mirror of Erised because he knew that he wouldn’t be able to get the Stone out of it.The Sorcerer’s Stone was safe in the mirror, in fact, and Harry never needed to go after it at all. It seems very much like the pursuit of the Stone was a series of tests set up by Dumbledore.

Harry Potter’s Plot Holes May Actually Be Part Of Dumbledore’s Greater Plan

Dumbledore Guided Harry To His Future

For Dumbledore to have planned out the tasks ofHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stonefor Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Quirrel would be in keeping with what we know about him. After finishing the books,I realized how much Dumbledore had planned all along. The movies suggested this suitably, despite not sticking to the texts word for word. Dumbledore meant for Harry to face Voldemort. In a twist that made me sad and angry as a child, it turned out that Dumbledore knew that Harry may have to die to save the world from Voldemort. Therefore, it makes sense ifDumbledore ruthlessly manipulated the events of book one.

Looking back at the plot holes in book one makes me more convinced than ever that Dumbledore’s wider plan involved the events ofHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.Dumbledore wanted to get the key fighters of the war that he saw coming ready, and he wanted to know if they were right for his plan. Dumbledore was ruthless, as military leaders have to be - he was fighting a war. Therefore, his manipulation of many of the series' intriguing and perilous goings-on is believable but sits in a gray area between acceptable and challenging. This is, of course, the wonder of his character.

Looking Back At The Series Just Makes Me Angrier At Dumbledore

Dumbledore Put His Students In Danger

I still find Dumbledore’s bold decisions angering, and find him even more maddening when I accept that he manipulated the Golden Trio inHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This is a testament to the series' rich and multilayered narrative. I also find Dumbledore to be a compelling leader. The plot holes inHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stonecrystallize exactly what it is about Dumbledore that makes him a dangerous man and a great character. I always found Dumbledore delightfully enigmatic.

And even when his intentions were laid out for me, I felt that some of the old Wizard’s choices had not been sufficiently explained. On closer analysis of the story’s plot holes, I understood that they worked as simplified elements of a YA fantasy story, but also as a deeper examination of Dumbledore’s grave responsibility. In this way,Rowling’s books worked for both children, young adults, and older readers. Dumbledore is a flawed, complex genius, makingHarry Pottera thoroughly modern slant on YA fantasy literature.
