Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu#6 is written by Jed MacKay and drawn by Domenico Carbone. Moon Knight has just been beaten senseless by the Asgardian Achilles Fairchild. Unconscious, Moon Knight has a vision of Khonshu, who goads Marc about his inability to beat Fairchild without help.Khonshu tells Moon Knight that he resurrects him, as well as his other Fists, because each subsequent revival drives him closer to insanity.Once the Fist has gone completely off the deep end, Khonshu can pick another one. Moon Knight is both surprised and angered by this news.

Khonshu Has Been Responsible for More Suffering in Moon Knight’s Life Than Any Villain

Moon Knight’s reaction to Khonshu’s confession is understandable, especially in light of the relationship the two have shared for the past five years.Khonshu empowered Marc, but in time the god’s demands became too much: in the story “Age of Khonshu,” running inAvengers, the god charged Moon Knight with stealing each member of the team’s powers. Khonshu had decided the only way to save the world was to take it over, andMoon Knight was going to help. The story climaxes with Moon Knight breaking with Khonshu, and the god being imprisoned in Asgard.

Two events conspired to help bring Khonshu back into Moon Knight’s life. The first was Marc Spector’s death at the hands of the Black Spectre. Hunter’s Moon, another recently-introduced Fist, tried to carry on Marc’s work in the Midnight Mission, but he proved hard to replace. The second event was the crossoverBlood Hunt. To stop Varnae’s vampire invasion, Hunter’s Moon and the Mission freed Khonshu,who in turn resurrected Moon Knightand an army of other Fists from across history. This turned the tide, and the heroes stopped the vampires.

He has lost friends and lovers, and does not enjoy the best of reputations among his fellow heroes–all because of Khonshu’s power and influence.

While the day was saved,Blood Hunt’sconclusion brought Khonshu back into Moon Knight’s life in a major way. Moon Knight has spent most of his life under Khonshu’s thumb, and has suffered greatly for it, a fact he notes in this issue. He has lost friends and lovers, and does not enjoy the best of reputations among his fellow heroes–all because of Khonshu’s power and influence. Moon Knight has tried desperately to shake Khonshu, and has only in the past two years managed to do so. Moon Knight runs the risk of becoming Khonshu’s errand boy again.

Now, with Khonshu’s admission that he cannot wait for Moon Knight to die so that he might pick a new Fist, this relationship takes a tail spin. Moon Knight’s mental health, like his physical body, has suffered intense pressure while working under Khonshu. This deterioration of his mind has ruined Moon Knight’s relationships with his friends, family and other heroes. Moon Knight has acquired a reputation for instability. All of this was apparently engineered by Khonshu, as a means of pruning Marc and getting rid of him for good.
