After its season 6 cancelation,The Residentappeared to be dead on arrival, but recent success could change the equation. The show first premiered on Fox in early 2018 and follows a group of workers at a hospital in Atlanta. With an ever-revolving door of cases, the team often struggled to ensure that their patients were safe. Theshow was canceled in 2023after season 6. Netflix has since picked up the show, and it has seen renewed interest on the streaming platform.

Manish Dayal, who starred as Dr. Devon Pravesh, recently spoke withTVInsiderabout his performance inThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. While discussing the horror show, he also mentioned his interest in seeing a revival ofThe Residentafter its recent success on Netflix. He would love to see a revival or spin-off, given that he still loves the show’s cast and its many characters. Check out his full quote below:

It’s bitter-sweet becauseI would have loved for the show to keep going. I would have loved to see Devin find the family he always yearned for and wanted. I think it’s two-fold. He embarks on this life as a doctor, risking it all and giving it all up because of his ambitions. He is going to work really hard and six years later after becoming a resident himself, he realizes that ironically he was in the same position where he started.

He still has to give up so much for a commitment he made years ago. It would have been nice to see him settle down and marry his fiance. At the same time, I think audiences know where it’s headed and believe in that relationship. They know they are destined for a real future. I think the show did amazing things. Amy Holden Jones was committed to shining a light on these issues in a way I don’t think so many people have been. She stayed committed to the pilot all the way to the last episode of Season 6. She was unwavering in that way. I love my cast.We all miss each other and stay in touch and remain very good friends.I think we all agree it would have been nice to connect this story together, but we ultimately understand all good things come to an end…

You better believe [I could see it return]. I would love it.It would be great for all of us to reunite and come together in a spin-off or something like that.Seeing howThe Walking Deadhas done it has been very creative. We would love to do it and I’m sure everyone would be down to play together again. It would be a lot of fun.

What Dayal’s Comments Mean For The Resident

The Show’s Fate Remains To Be Seen

Dayal’s comments do not hold any water in-and-of themselves. While Dayal would undoubtedly love to see a follow-up and would likely rejoin the cast, the decision to approve a revival will fall to Netflix’s creative directorsand executive producers. Unfortunately, the cast has no direct control over the production, which is why Dayal has moved on to focus his energy onthe upcomingThe Book of Carol. The medical procedural, unfortunately, remains in limbo as Netflix continues to mull over a potential spin-off or sequel.

During its run, the show fell from an average of 7 million viewers to just 4.5 million for each episode.

Yet, while his hopes are not altogether influential, they are a sign of one positive element: interest from his fellow cast members. The show’s cast could very well agree to return, if they are truly as close as Dayal implies. Other stars, including Malcolm Jamal Warner and Ian Anthony Dale have discussed their willingness to return before. Even if the actors accept other projects, a return is not entirely impossible. It does not mean that a revival is guaranteed, of course, but it does mean that it could come with enough interest from audiences.

Our Take On The Resident’s Revival

Netflix Would Be Wise To Continue The Show

Since coming to streaming, the procedural has become a hit show. The Resident’s Netflix successhas given it the opportunity to take its place as one of Netflix’s top domestic English-language shows. After its early cancelation left it bereft of a proper finale, the platform could capitalize on recent viewership potential by bringing the cast back for a farewell season. Netflix already renewedArrested Development,Mystery Science Theater 3000, andSuitsfor spin-offs or follow-up seasons, so it is not improbable. If the streaming giant wants more attention, it could soon secure a medical drama of its own.
