One of the most universally hated quests inBaldur’s Gate 3is that to help Oskar Fevras recover from his possession. It’s a quest that technically starts in Act One, whenplayers can help the troubled artist escape the Zhentarim beneath Waukeen’s Rest. But the real trouble doesn’t start until Act Three, when players reach the Jannath family estate and find the place haunted. Oskar is betrothed to the lady of the house, yet his obsession over his former love has led to her ghost taking over the entire mansion.

The quest itself is interesting enough, butcompleting it requires the player’s party to navigate through one of the most frustrating and tedious areas in the game, full of invisible ghosts and painful traps. It’s so bad that many players will simply skip the quest, rather than save Oskar to obtain his reward. But there are a few tactics that can improve the experience, and make helping this tortured painter less of a torturous experience.

What Needs To Be Done To Complete The Quest?

Doing The Bare Minimum To Save Oskar

The first thing to recognize about thequest to free Oskaris that it is not necessary to explore most of Jannath Estate while it’s still haunted. There will be time after the quest to loot the gold and gear, so there’s no need to search through each room to open the various chests and safes. The easiest way to do this quest involves making a beeline to the only rooms that need to be visited to complete it:the bedroom, where lady Jannath and possessed Oskar are located, and the atelier on the top floor.

If players have already retrieved Torch of Revocation, they can proceed to the atelier immediately and burn the painting. This will skip the first part of the quest and potentially cut down on the time it takes, though it does take some level of meta-gaming.

The first stop needs to be the bedroom, where players will find out Oskar is possessed and start this part of the quest. Next stop is the atelier tofind Oskar’s cursed painting, which must be burned using the Torch of Revocation, obtainable from the Mystic Carrion, who needs the player’s helpkilling Thrumbo in another quest. Finally, players will need to return to the bedroom to confront Oskar. Because parts of the manor can be accessed from the outside by flying up to the balcony, it’s possible to skip many of the rooms other than those two essential ones.

Avoiding The Traps And Tortured Souls Within Jannath Estate

Avoid As Many Rooms As You Can

Unfortunately, there are some rooms that must be navigated through, and those rooms are full of ghosts and ghostly traps. Poltergeist enemies move invisibly around the hallways, Vengeful and Tortured Souls hide within candelabras to inflict harmful spells on passersby, andCursed Skulls sit near stairwells to fling characters back downif they end their turn too close. There are different strategies to deal with each of these hazards.

Bosses are extra deadly with Legendary Actions, but they aren’t the only dangers that can wipe out the party in Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode.

The Cursed Skulls are weak to force and bludgeoning damage, so a warlock witheldritch blastor a monk with their unarmed strikes can make quick work of them while moving ahead of the rest of the party. The Poltergeists have disadvantage on dexterity saving throws while invisible, so hitting large areas withfireballandcone of coldcan catch them in the blast. And the candelabras, though annoying with their damaging effects, are best ignored, since attacking them will spawn an enemy that can be even more annoying to deal with.

Beating The Ghosts And Saving Oscar

Come In To This Quest Prepared

The best and most consistent strategy to complete this quest is to start by flying up to the balcony after already obtaining the Torch of revocation from Mystic Carrion. Players may also want totake a Potion of See Invisibility or replace their eye with the version Volo offersafterletting him attempt to remove Tav’s eye. This will let them see the Poltergeists and deal with them directly. Proceed up the stairs and speak to Jannath, then keep going up, blasting the skulls along the way.

Having the highest speed possible can let players run past the ghosts, since it isn’t necessary to beat them all to finish the quest. Things like the illithid power Fly, Boots of Speed, or spells likehastecan make this area much more navigable.

Eventually, after reaching and destroying the painting, the party can return to the bedroom and either let the ghost kill Oscar or defend him from it. Finally, after all this, any lingering spirits will be removed from the house, and players are free to loot it to their heart’s content. They can even get Oscar to paint them, if he survives. All in all, while the execution of this area leaves much to be desired,Baldur’s Gate 3always offers ways to make areas easier to traverse.
