DC recently announcedKrypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1,by Ryan North and Mike Morton, will hit shelves June 18, just in time to reach audiences before Superman’s theatrical release the following month. Throughout the five-issue mini-series, Krypto will navigate the perils and triumphs of life for a lost alien dog searching for his missing best friend.
While Krypto certainly has superpowers, he’s ultimately a dog like any other. When he lands on Earth,he doesn’t understand what’s going on, where he is, or how to find little Kal-El, leaving him to figure things out the way only a canine can.
DC Offers a Closer Look at Krypto’s Origin

Although Krypto is already recognizable in the DC Universe,Krypto: The Last Dog of Kryptonoffers something different. Rather than drop in while he’s already fighting crime alongside his beloved Superman, Ryan North wanted to explore what it would really be like for a dog to end up on a completely unfamiliar planet. Krypto was always driven to get back to Kal-El, but that’s easier said than done, especially when he was stuck navigating new powers of his own. Audiences know his journey will ultimately be successful, but exploring his early days offers valuable insight intowhat sets Krypto apart.
The chance to really define Krypto—to show what a little lost dog would go through if he landed all alone on a strange alien world named Earth—was really enticing.
North wanted to dig into Krypto’s adventures without Superman, including what it would be like for a dog who couldn’t speak or effectively communicate to grasp an entirely unfamiliar planet. WhileSuperman ended up with the Kent familyto raise and guide him, Krypto was on his own to survive and find his friend, which the miniseries will largely explore through art without text bubbles or inner dialogue. It’s a whole new world and a whole new life seen through the eyes of the universe’s very best boy. Krypto’s bond with Superman is compelling, but it had to start somewhere.
