WhetherSuitswould have been as good as it was without Mike Ross’ secret and photographic memory gimmick is a question thatSuits: L.A.is about to answer. WhileGabriel Macht will return as Harvey Specterfor three episodes ofSuits: L.A., the upcoming spinoff will follow an entirely new set of characters and will take place, as the title suggests, in Los Angeles instead of New York. Getting aSuitsrevival would’ve been fun, but a new series with new characters set in that same world does sound promising.

So far, not much has been revealed aboutSuits: L.A.’s storyother than Ted Black, played by Stephen Amell, will have to lead his firm through a moment of crisis as ghosts from the past come back to haunt him.Suits: L.A.will be set in an entertainment law firm, meaning that its cases and overall tone should differ greatly from the original show. Another important difference betweenSuits: L.A.and its predecessor is that, for now,the spinoff doesn’t seem to have a character with a secret and gimmick like what Mike Ross had.

Suits: L.A. Will Prove Whether Suits Would’ve Worked Without Mike’s Gimmick

Suits: L.A. Doesn’t Seem To Have A Character With A Superpower Like Mike

Suits’ pilot, as well as most of the first couple of seasons, was focused on how unique of a character Mike Ross was. Similar to other extraordinary characters from USA Network’s procedural shows such as Adrian Monk and Shawn Spencer, Mike had a unique gift that made him stand out. Thanks to his photographic memory, Mike often won the cases that no one else could think of small details everyone would’ve missed. While this helpedSuitsset itself apart from other legal dramas,Mike’s superpower quickly became tiresome and unrealistic.

Suits: L.A.premiers August 07, 2025.

Suitseventually grew beyond Mike’s gimmick and became a slightly more grounded legal drama, even though the show was often not really accurate in that regard. Still, by the second half of the show,Mike’s photographic memory and even his Harvard secret had become way less important than they used to be.This led to a debate about whetherSuitscould’ve been somewhat the same show even without the “lawyer that doesn’t have a law degree but has an incredible git” routine.Suits: L.A.might finally answer this question if it doesn’t have a Mike-esque character.

Mike Ross’ Secret And Gift Were Important, But Suits Was More Than That

Suitsseason 1’s biggest hook wasMike Ross' secret. The idea of someone who didn’t even go to college making his way into one of the most important law firms in New York thanks to a reckless senior partner sounded incredibly fun and madeSuits’ pilot very engaging. However, there were only so many timesSuitscould do the “Mike wins the case thanks to his genius” bit before it would get old.Even Mike’s secret itself eventually lost its meaning once pretty much everyone, including Louis, had learned about it.

Thankfully,Suitshad more to offer than just Mike’s superpower. One of the reasons why the show ran for so long is because of how compelling its other characters, including but not limited to Harvey, were. In hindsight, seeing Harvey“play the man”to win a case was way more interesting than Mike’s Deus ex machina solutions. That is not to mention other characters who would steal the show from time to time such as Jessica and Louis.Suitseven managed to continue for two seasons after Mike was written out of the show.

Suits: L.A. Could Still Be Hiding A Mike Ross-Type Of Twist For The Pilot Episode

We Still Don’t Know What Suits: L.A.’s Overarching Story Will Be

Whilenothing so far has indicated thatSuits: L.A.will have its own Mike Ross, it is still too soon to say whether the show will have any characters with some kind of secret that will set the tone for the series.Suits: L.A.could very well be just a regular legal drama with no gimmicks or extraordinary characters, which could work considering that some of thebestSuitsepisodeshad nothing to do with Mike’s secret or his photographic memory.

All 9 Seasons Of Suits, Ranked Worst To Best

Suits is a memorable legal drama that has made a huge mark on TV and streaming, but some seasons and storylines were much better than others.

The best thing aboutSuitswas how the power dynamics intertwined with the relationships between the characters, which is something thatSuits: L.A.could replicate even if its lawyers are entirely different from the ones inSuits. That said, ifSuits: L.A.is hiding some kind of twist that can be compared to Mike’s Harvard fraud, it will most likely be revealed during the pilot. Hopefully,Suits: L.A.will be different enough fromSuitswhile still having an exciting overarching story.
