Power Rangers Zeointroduced what should have been the strongest team in the franchise based on Zordon’s description of the Zeo crystals, yet they only lasted 50 episodes. After three successful seasons ofMighty Morphin Power Rangers, the show had no choice but to move to the nextSuper Sentai adaptation. Shifting from the already iconicMMPRcostumes to new ones was risky, but it set a precedent that would definePower Rangersfor decades to come.

AfterZeo,everyPower Rangersseasonwould be based on a different Super Sentai show. This means that the costumes and the Zords would change after each season or so. As a result, mostPower Rangersseries afterMMPRwould end with the heroes losing their powers or retiring, leaving room for a new team to rise. However, the transition fromZeotoTurbowasn’t very well thought out.

Power Rangers’ Zeo Team Only Lasted One Season Before Shifting Into Turbo

The Zeo Powers Mysteriously Disappeared During The Turbo Movie

The disappearance of the Zeo powers remains one of the strangest chapters in thePower Rangerschronology, at least from an in-universe perspective. With the show moving from aChouriki Sentai Ohrangeradaptation toGekisou Sentai Carranger, it only made sense forPower Rangersto introduce new Zords and a new set of powers that would replace the Zeo ones. The problem, however, is that neither theTurbomovie nor theTurboshow ever explained why the Rangers had to abandon the Zeo powers. Additionally,Power Rangersnever explained what happened to the Zeo crystals.

The team led by Tommy still had their Zeo powers by the end ofPower Rangersseason 4. However, a few minutes intoTurbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Zordon presents the Rangers with new powers and Zords. The Zeo powers only appear once during theTurbofilm, when Kat briefly morphs into Zeo Pink before as she falls from a cliff. The fact that the Zeo crystals had been described as being far more powerful than the Mighty Morphin powers made their sudden disappearance ahead ofPower Rangers Turboeven stranger.

Tommy’s Zeo Ranger V Form Made A Surprising Return In Forever Red

The Zeo Rangers Also Appeared A Few Other Times In Power Rangers

Kat’s failed morph inTurbo: A Power Rangers Movieremained as the final appearance of a Zeo Ranger for five years. This changed whenJason David Frank’s Tommy Oliver, who had been away from the show since the latter half ofTurbo, returned forWild Force’s “Forever Red” crossover.Tommy was one of 10 veteran Red Rangers who went to the moonto fight the Machine Empire in a nostalgic episode that honored the first decade ofPower Rangersshows. While Tommy had accumulated four Ranger forms by that point, he morphed into Zeo Ranger V Red.

This 22-Year-Old Power Rangers Episode Fulfilled The Dreams Of Every ‘90s Kid

One of the greatest Power Rangers episodes of all time delivered an interaction that every 1990s kid who watched the show had dreamed of seeing.

With T.J. as Turbo Red, it made sense for Tommy to show up as Zeo Red, but the episode doesn’t explain how or why he was using that power. Tommy would morph into Zeo Red again in “Dimensions in Danger,” this time by using a Master Morpher. Four Zeo Rangers appeared in “The Legendary Battle,” although the 20th-anniversary special wasn’t too worried about continuity and even featured Sentai teams that were never inPower Rangersto begin with. More recently, Zeo Yellow Tanya was one of the Rangers captured by Rita Repulsa inPower Rangers: Once & Always.
