Richard Ayoade Voices Q9-0, AKA Zero, In The Mandalorian

Ayoade’s Character is a Thorn in Din Djarin’s Side

Ayoade plays the voice of Q9-0, known more simply as Zero, inThe Mandalorianseason 1, episode 6. As a droid,Din Djarin(Pedro Pascal) is quickly at odds with Zero, given his well-established hatred for their kind. Zero doesn’t make this easier for him, as the droid is not only responsible for piloting Din’s ownRazor Crest, but he also hunts downGroguinside the ship until Mando comes to the child’s rescue. Though he’s not directly a part of the action inside theNew Republicprison ship,Zero is the key mastermind dictating their moves throughout the job.

How Zero Is Important To The Mandalorian’s Story

His Impact Goes Beyond Season 1, Episode 6

While Zero does ultimately meet his fate at Din Djarin’s hands inThe Mandalorianseason 1, episode 6, he has a unique legacy that Mando, ironically, carries with him wherever he goes. After losing his right cuisse (thigh armor) during the battle on Nevarro inThe Mandalorianseason 1 finale,Din has to get crafty to create a new piece of armor - and he uses a piece of Zero’s old body in its place. Din still has this piece of armor in his beskar suit to this day, which means that a piece of Zero quite literally sticks with him all the time.

Ayoade briefly reprised his role as Zero inThe Mandalorianseason 2, episode 2 “Chapter 10: The Passenger,” when Frog Lady used the droid’s old vocabulator to translate her language for Din Djarin to understand.

In a more substantial manner, however, Ayoade briefly reprised his role as Zero inThe Mandalorianseason 2, episode 2 “Chapter 10: The Passenger,” when Frog Lady uses the droid’s old vocabulator to translate her language for Din Djarin to understand. This method of translation allows Mando to further understand the urgency of Frog Lady’s situation, which is what ultimately motivates him to attempt fixing theRazor Crestin Maldo Kreis' freezing cold climate. Ayoade has yet to return again toThe Mandalorian, though Zero will always live on in this story.
