Atop being an incredibly fun story that I found to be heartwarming and hilarious,LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxyalso scratched an itch I have had regarding the franchise for years. Via its story that plays with the conventions of thebest and worst ofStar Warsmovies,LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxyoffered the closest thing yet to aStar WarsWhat If?

Many Star Wars Characters, Planets, & Stories Are Blended Together
More so than anything else inStar Wars, including thestories ofStar Wars Visions,Rebuild the Galaxyserved as a What If? of the galaxy. This was done in several ways, most notably the flipping of character roles. For example, the primary villains ofRebuild the Galaxyare heroes-turned-bad from the mainlineStar Warsmovies. The evil team consists of Rey, Rose Tico, Jar Jar Binks, Nubs, and Kit Fisto, while the team of Jedi in the show is made up of classic villains like Palpatine, Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, Cad Bane, and General Grievous.
At one point, the team visits Tatooine, now depicted as a planet of vast oceans rather than deserts…

Can More Star Wars “What If” Stories Work?
Star Wars What If Is An Interesting Concept
Naturally,Rebuild the Galaxyraises the question of whether moreStar Warsstories can work in a What If? format. While I, and many others, would love to see more fleshed-out What If? scenarios withStar Wars’iconic characters, it remains the case that it would be admittedly difficult to do. Unlike other major franchises like Marvel or DC,Star Warsdoes not possess the concept of a multiverse, which makes these kinds of stories difficult to pull off. Something likeLEGO Star Warshas the freedom of being separate from canon in a way mostStar Warsstories are not.
Ahsoka introduced the concept of other galaxies, which could provide a kind of multiversal exploration.
That said, a TV show that is established as non-canon before release - likeStar Wars Visions- could allow for What If? scenarios to be explored. This would be overwhelmingly exciting, as it would giveStar Warsfans an insight into how the galaxy may have been different. WhetherStar Warswill ever grant fans wishes by providing this kind of story remains to be seen, but there is no denying thatLEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxyis the closest Lucasfilm has come to doing so thus far, stoking my excitement for more.
