Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #61

A new era has come forSpider-Man, one that has given him an impressive new healing factor to show him just how dark power can actually be in the Marvel Universe. As the new Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom has elected to outsource certain mystical trials Doctor Strange normally would have done himself. To that end, Doom has chosen Spider-Man to become the new “Champion in the Covenant of Cyttorrak”, meaning that Spidey now has to fight the eight scions of Cytorrak while wearing brand-new Arcane Armor (courtesy of Doom). However, Spider-Man’s first fight has redefined the meaning of the word pain thanks to his new healing abilities.

InThe Amazing Spider-Man #61by Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness,Spider-Man eventually agrees to become Doom’s Champion, facing one of the scions wearing his new armor while also holding eight “Reeds of Raggadorr” which can restore his life after death. To that end, Spider-Man sacrifices himself to defeat this first scion by entering a black hole held within the heart of this first dark god. While one of the powerful Reeds is used to bring Spider-Man back to life, the Webslinger’s new mystical healing factor is proven to be the furthest thing from pleasant.

Spider-Man Dies Via Black Hole

Spider-Man’s Just Suffered The Worst Death Imaginable

Spaghettification Via A Black Hole

On entering this black hole,Spider-Man’s body was effectively spaghettified, an excruciating process where the body is both stretched and compressed upon entering the black hole’s gravity well. While the atomizing death is nearly instantaneous, the space-time distortion makes it feel like 96 hours in relation to Spider-Man himself. To that end, it’s hard to come up with a death that could be more painful than this one, not to mention the fact that Spider-Man’s apparently supposed to suffer seven more similar deaths which could very well be even worse as this new mystical arc continues.

It’s also worth mentioning that this is all explained by none other thanPhil Coulson, the Marvel Universe’s current embodiment of Deathseeing as how he’s the wielder of the powerful Death Stone. Rather than putting Spider-Man through the normal intake process that apparently comes with crossing over the other side, Coulson stops once he sees that Spider-Man has the Reeds. However, Coulson surprisingly apologizes and tells Spider-Man to stay strong, knowing that what’s about to happen to the Websligner is far worse than the horrible death he just suffered.

Spider-Man’s Magical New Healing Factor Is Just As Brutal

Redefining The Meaning Of Pain

One would think that a healing factor would inherently be a good thing for Spider-Man, allowing him to come back to life after being so brutally ripped apart. However, this new issue shows that the process of restoring Peter Parker’s body and reversing the atomization process is far from comfortable. As shown in this new issue, all Spider-Man can say is that the pain he endured while his body was being completely reknit was inconceivable.

“There is one hero whom Spider-Man should absolutely reach out to for help in future issues…”

Wolverine & Spider-Man fist-bumping meme template.

Keeping all that in mind, it’s no wonder that Spider-Man can barely function at the end of this issue and is begging for help. It truly shows just how painful a healing factor can be, even though the end result is extremely advantageous. That said, Spider-Man is clearly going to need to talk to someone if he’s going to be able to keep his sanity during the fights to come, and the spirit of Doctor Strange seen at the end of the issue likely won’t be enough. That said, there is one hero whom Spider-Man should absolutely reach out to for help in future issues.

I’m Really Hoping Spider-Man Reaches Out To Wolverine

Logan Knows All About Pain (And Being Brought Back From The Brink)

If there’s any hero and established friend of Spider-Man’s that Peter could reach out to for support, it’s Wolverine. After all,Wolverine is all too familiar with the pain that comes from an accelerated healing factorand the ability to come back from certain death itself. After all, this is the X-Man who has canonically healed from nearly all of his flesh being burned away, getting his heart town out from his chest, surviving a nuclear blast, being run over by a steamroller, his adamantium skeleton being ripped through his flesh by Magneto, eaten by the Hulk, and more extreme experiences he’s been able to walk away from.

Why Wolverine & Spider-Man Are Bumping Fists in That Iconic Meme

A popular meme template has been circulating the internet for more than a decade of Wolverine & Spider-Man fist-bumping. Here’s where it came from!

Likewise,I would also love to see Wolverine himself reaching out to Spider-Manwhen and if he learns about his new mystical status quo. The two heroes are canonically friends, andI would certainly imagine that Wolverine would be there to help Spider-Man manage these newfound and extreme levels of pain that’s come with this new healing factor that looks to rival Logan’s own impressive abilities. At any rate, it’s going to be fascinating to see how Spider-Man handles his next seven deaths in the Marvel Universe.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is the name given to several individuals who have employed a spider-moniker throughout Marvel Comics. Typically gaining their powers through a bite from a radioactive spider, the different Spider-Man heroes employ super-strength, agility, and intellect while utilizing webbing to swing and tangle up their foes. The most notable of these Spider-Men is Peter Parker, who remains one of the most popular superheroes throughout the world.

Wolverine

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics' biggest stars. He’s played in Fox and Marvel’s movie franchises by Hugh Jackman.
