Eddie Brock Found Out the Truth inVenom #18, by Al Ewing and Cafu

InVenom #18, Venom argued with his future self about his place in the grand scheme of things as a literal god. Far from being comforted, Eddie was informed thatthe role was actually meant to belong to Spider-Man, but cosmic coincidence meant that Eddie ended up possessing it instead. Now, Peter Parker is actually getting the title he was seemingly"born for,“but Marvel’s issue summary suggests that far from living up to it, Peter would be corrupted by this much power.

In recent comics, the Venom symbiote abandoned Dylan, worrying it was putting the young hero in harm’s way. The symbiote returned to Spider-Man, reasoning that Peter Parker is the one person who will never again be tempted by the darkness it inspires in its hosts. Sadly, it seems the symbiote was wrong, and that its heroic decision will only serve to drag Spider-Man into the growing conflict for the crown of the King in Black.

When Venom first appeared, Spider-Man didn’t know just what he was getting into by wearing his new suit. This time, however, he knows that to fight the comingVenom War, he needs to embrace his dark side. Hopefully, Peter Parker won’t lose his lighter, comical side in the effort, as he undergoes one last temptation with the black suit. Spider-Man is definitely the most likely candidate to resist corruption and become a worthy King in Black, but that’s seeming less and less probable. Marvel’s hint thatSpider-Manwould be calamitous as the King in Black establishesthe dark truth behindVenom War’s conflict - whoever wins, it seems that the universe will pay the price.
