While collecting cards for thePokémon Trading Card Game, one player discovered a connection between the Octillery and Basculin cards that hints at dire results for one trainer. Over the years,Pokémon TCGfans have enjoyed finding hidden Easter eggs in the pictures on the cards they were collecting, which would tell a story about the Pokémon they were adding to their decks. In this case, the story is about one unfortunate human bystander.

Originally posted to TikTok bypokefam_tcgand shared byHexManiacChrison X, an inspection of the cards for water-types Octillery and Basculin reveals the dark fate of a one-off character. In the Octillery card, the red octopus-like Pokémon sits in a bucket of water on a dock, watching a nearby human fish wearing a yellow hat fishing on the opposite side.

When looking at the Basculin card,pokefam_tcg zoomed in to the center of the swarm of angry Basculin, revealing a very familiar hat that they’re ripping up. It doesn’t necessarily confirm a gruesome fate, but it’s hard to ignore the overall implication.

Pokémon’s Octillery & Basculin Connection Is Surprisingly Morbid

They’re Gone And There’s Nothing Players Can Do About It

This poor human lost their hat to the angry Basculin — and perhaps their life — could be seen as revenge forhumans eating other Baculin. However, the best comment came fromHashKetchum408, who replied to the video on X, saying, “Sheesh. Talk about sleeping with the fishes lol.” The classic mobster line is apt here if the human went into the drink along with their hat. Perhaps Octillery just shot the hat off of the human, butit’s ultimately funnier to believe Octillery couldn’t be bothered by the human’s encounter with the Basculin.

This continues a trend withPokémon TCGcards that weave an interconnected image for players to find. Recently, the Latias, Latios, and Mesprit cards from thePokémon TCGSurging Sparks Setfeatured connected artwork. This was ultimately tamer, as it depicts the Pokémon flying across a landscape with the sun setting in the distance. It’s a gorgeous overall picture, whilethe art in the Octillery and Basculin cards tells a story akin to something in a newspaper comic strip.
