As the leader of theSilocast, Ferguson’s character has led the investigation into why the last remaining groups of humanity have been confined to the mysterious structures in which they reside. Although it is possible to go outside,every character who has left the Silo before Juliette has perishedvery shortly after.
Siloseason 2picks up directly after theend ofSiloseason 1, proving thatJuliette’s survival in the outside world was far more than just a fluky few moments.Juliette’s discovery of another Siloforms the foundation of the story in the season 2 premiere. Although she takes refuge in the new structure, she does so with no real rush at first, suggesting she has a lot of trust in the equipment keeping her alive.
The Heat Tape On Juliette’s Suit Kept Her Alive Outside In Silo
Juliette made sure her suit was sealed better than those of her predecessors
Almost everySilocharacter who has been sent out to clean has died soon after, despite being equipped with an environment suit. This makes Juliette something of an outlier.Siloseason 1 reveals that the tape being used to secure the suit’s gloves and shoes was intentionally inferior, leading to the deaths of Rashida Jones’ Allison Becker and her TV husband, David Oyelowo’s Holston Becker, when they are both sent out to clean on two separate occasions. Juliette, on the other hand, is able to acquire superior heat tape, meaning her suit is sufficiently sealed to withstand the conditions outside.
She follows the trail of corpses into the Silo as well, although those bodies presumably died from the battle shown during the flashback at the beginning of the episode.
The air outside the Silos isn’t breathable, so the suits are the only way to survive on the surface. This is supported even further by the fate of the second structure’s inhabitants inSiloseason 2, episode 1, “The Engineer.” Juliette comes across a vast field of long-dead bodies, their deaths clearly caused by the lack of specialist equipment. The superior quality of Juliette’s heat tape is what allowed her to survive outside, but it also nearly causes her demise when she’s concealed safely inside the other Silo. Her suit only provides Ferguson’s character with a limited air supply, which she quickly exhausts due to the energy spent forcing open the door to the other Silo. Closing the door to the poisoned air behind her,the tape keeping her gloves in place is too well-secured for Juliette to remove, especially with the gloves themselves already reducing her dexterity.
