Deciding how to handle Sapdal inAvowedis one of the most consequential choices regarding how the game’s story turns out. While there are some gameplay changes, they aren’t as consequential as the narrative ones, given how little of the game is left after you make this choice.Avowed’s narrative does its best to cast doubt on your decision here, but if you pay close attention and finish the right side quests, your choice will be a bit easier.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Avowed.]

One thing that can help you make up your mind is finding all of Sapadal’s Ancient Memories. These snippets into Sapdal’s past, especially the one found in The Garden, will give you a clearer understanding of the type of god they are and what you may expect if you free them. Most of yourchoices matter inAvowed, but few are as consequential for the future of the Living Lands as this one. While all your options here could make sense for a particular style of playthrough, there is one that seems better overall if you’re struggling to decide.
What Happens If You Kill Sapadal In Avowed
Killing Avowed Leads To Less Happy Endings
Killing Sapadal has some immediate and long-term effects, but I’ll start with the immediate ones if you don’t want the story aspect spoiled. Choosing to kill Sapadal will please the rival god Woedica and earn you one ofAvowed’s Godlike powers: Woedica’s Call. This power allows you to summon a powerful Maegfolc ally to help you fight. Maegfolc are the large robots you’ll face in The Garden before reaching Sapadal, giving you some indication of what this summon will be like.
Should You Kill Or Spare The Weeping Willow Delemgan In Avowed?
During the Boundaries of Antiquity quest in Avowed, you’ll have the choice to help or kill the Weeping Willow Delemgan and decide the fate of Solace.
Destroying Sapadal also affects the type of ending screens that you get. The game’s epilogue is told through still images and a voice-over describing what happens after your journey is complete, one of several qualitiesAvowedshares withFallout: New Vegas, one of Obsidian’s other action RPGs. The endings you get for destroying Sapadal discuss their absence in your thoughts and some reference that you are now enjoying the freedom that they never did. While these endings aren’t necessarily terrible, they are a bit more melancholy than the ones you can earn by freeing the trapped nature god.

Additionally, if you’ve decided early on to destroy Sapadal, you can avoid a boss fight that happens before entering The Garden. While talking to Inquisitor Lödwyn in Galawain’s Tusks, you can tell her that you plan to destroy Sapadal. If you do, she won’t fight you, saving you some time and the effort of killing her the first time. That said, if you choose this option, you will miss out on some experience from a fight and some loot from Lödwyn’s body. Fighting Lödwyn here won’t lock you out of deciding to destroy Sapadal later on in The Garden.
What Happens If You Free Sapadal
Freeing Sapdal Creates A More Optimistic Future For The Living Lands
Like destroying them, freeing Sapadal inAvowedwill earn you a new Godlike power. Instead of Woedica’s Call, you will get Sapadal’s Fury, a spell that lifts nearby enemies and slams them into the ground, dealing a good amount of damage. The ability is really satisfying to use, especially against large waves of enemies, but it could be argued that Woedica’s Call is a bit stronger. Having an additional ally for 45 seconds can have some added benefits, like soaking up damage, which can be helpful for squishier classes like a Ranger, Wizard, or aRanger/Wizard multiclass build.
When it comes to endings, freeing Sapadal offers more optimistic outcomes than destroying it.

When it comes to endings, freeing Sapadal offers more optimistic outcomes than destroying it. These endings show that Sapadal is no longer experiencing the anger that caused the Dreamscourge plague and is finally free and at peace. The Envoy can still communicate with the freed god, and this ending makes it clear that they are glad for the company.
Should You Kill Or Spare Razvan In Avowed?
As part of Marius’s companion quest in Avowed, you’ll be tasked with finding Razvan, a zealot cult leader - but should you kill him or spare him?
If you allow Sapadal to fuse some of their essence with the Eothas statue during the Dawntreader quest, they will also begin to travel the land using the statue as a body. This leads to some heartwarming descriptions of Sapadal enjoying their freedomand exploring the world. It’s nice to see the god allowed to have some fun after their long imprisonment.

There is also an alternative way to free Sapadal: tobecome one with them. This option has the Envoy essentially absorbing Sapadal, so it removes any ending screens dedicated to the god, as they no longer exist as a separate entity. You will still gain the Sapadal’s Fury power if you choose this method.
You Should Free Sapadal In Avowed
There Is No Downside To Freeing Sapadal
Freeing Sapadal is ultimately the better choice when it comes toAvowed’s endgame. While I can see Woedica’s Call being a slightly better power for certain builds, it really shouldn’t make a huge difference. I hadn’t capped out my level when I reached the end ofAvowed, nor did I have the best gear and the final boss was still pretty easy to defeat. Unless you’ve ignored all the sidequests and are severely under-leveled, what power you get shouldn’t make a big difference here.
Should You Kill Or Spare Grakohr In Avowed?
While exploring Galawain’s Tusks in Avowed, you will encounter a sick ogre Grakohr who killed traders. Here’s how you should handle the encounter.
You’ll get happier endings inAvowedif you free Sapdal, so as long as that’s what you’re looking for, freeing them is the right choice. Of course, if you prefer a deliberately less cheery ending, you may choose to destroy the god instead. However, barring an evil run of the game, I don’t see a good reason to make that decision.
