Although Jeri Ryan’s ex-Borg drone Seven of Nine spent only four years on the USS Voyager, the rich history ofStar Trek: Voyager’s breakout character was revealed through flashbacks and dialogue. Each season ofStar Trek: Voyagerrevealed more about Seven of Nine’s history beforeCaptain Kathryn Janeway’s (Kate Mulgrew) USS Voyager crew liberated Seven from the Borg Collective.Previously, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) could only be severed from the Collective because he’d been Locutus for mere days, but Seven of Nine had spent most of her life as a Borg drone.

Seven of Nine began life as Annika Hansen, a human born on the Tendara colony in 2344 to civilian scientists Erin and Magnus Hansen. Decades before the Federation’s official first contact with the Borg inStar Trek: The Next Generationseason 2, episode 6, “Q Who”, the Hansens suspected that the cybernetic species existed.Erin and Magnus brought Annika with them on the USS Raven’s planned 3-year missionto confirm the existence of the Borg. When Annika was only four years old, the USS Raven followed a Borg cube through a transwarp conduit and emerged inStar Trek’s Delta Quadrant.

Annika Hansen Was Assimilated By The Borg And Became Seven Of Nine (2350-2374)

Seven Of Nine’s Tragic Early Life Was Told In Star Trek: Voyager Flashbacks

Annika Hansen and her parents were assimilated by the Borg in 2350, after a few years of successfully evading the Borg while gathering data on them. The Hansen parents were put into service as Borg drones, and six-year-old Annika was placed in a Borg maturation chamber. For five years, Annika’s body was prepared for the full assimilation process and stripped of individuality. At eleven years old,the entity formerly known as Annika Hansen was given the designation Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01. Over the next 19 years, Seven of Nine assimilated millions of other life forms.

Even early on, Seven of Nine faced challenges to her assimilation. In 2368, Seven of Nine was one of four drones who were temporarily separated from the Collective. Because Seven had been assimilated while her body was still developing, Seven’s human identity did not reassert itself at this time.Seven of Nine was singled out as the Collective’s representative during Captain Kathryn Janeway’s negotiations with the Borg in 2374, since Janeway refused the temporary assimilation that would make communication more efficient. The Borg plot to assimilate Voyager using Seven failed, so theCollective rejected Seven of Nine.

Seven Of Nine Joined USS Voyager’s Crew (2374–2378)

Seven Of Nine Was “Reborn” On The USS Voyager

After being liberated from the Borg Collective, Seven of Nine joined the USS Voyager crew, but Seven’s integration into her “new collective” wasn’t easy.Seven of Nine and Captain Janewayfrequently disagreed on philosophy and procedure alike, while Janeway’s pressure also helped Seven learn to assert her own individuality.Unlikely friendships with Voyager’s Emergency Medical Hologram (Robert Picardo) and young Naomi Wildman (Scarlett Pomers) helped Seven of Nine rediscover her humanity.Voyager’s encounter with immature Borg drones, including Icheb (Manu Intiraymi), made Seven ade factomother figure, as Seven learned to care for others.

To Me, Seven Of Nine Is Star Trek’s Most Impressive Character

Although the Star Trek franchise is full of great characters, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine has become one of the most impressive since her introduction.

Seven of Nine’s four years with the USS Voyager crew proved that a Borg drone could be rehabilitated. Instead of denying her past,Seven used her knowledge to give the USS Voyager crew a fighting chance against the Borg.Seven of Nine built and operated Voyager’s new astrometrics lab with Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang), helped Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) build the Delta Flyer, and contributed Borg nanoprobes to technological solutions. When theUSS Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrantin 2378, Seven didn’t share the crew’s enthusiasm, because Earth had never been Seven of Nine’s home.

Seven Of Nine Became A Fenris Ranger And Met Admiral Picard (2379–2399)

Seven Of Nine’s Starfleet Rejection Led To A Fenris Ranger Backup Plan—And A New Crew

With few Alpha Quadrant connections, Seven of Nine’s time with the Fenris Rangers was most likely fairly lonely.Star Trek: Lower Decksseason 4, episode 9, “The Inner Fight”, lists Seven of Nine as a missing individual with Starfleet connections who might require protection, suggesting Seven is difficult to track down in 2381. Seven’s only blood relative back home was an estranged aunt, Irene Hansen (Lorinne Vozoff), who was never mentioned again.

In 2399, Seven of Nine met Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of La Sirenawhen both were tracking down Bjayzl. Seven helped other former drones—now known as xBs—of the Borg Reclamation Project, and reconnected with La Sirena’s crew on Coppelius. Captain Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera) gave La Sirena to Seven of Nine for use with the Fenris Rangers for a year, during which timeSeven’s relationship with Commander Raffi Musiker(Michelle Hurd) began. In 2401, Seven traveled to 21st-century L.A. with Picard’s crew to fix a corrupted timeline and reckoned with her identity as an xB.

Seven Of Nine Joined Starfleet And Became Captain Of The Enterprise (2401–2402)

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Sets Up Captain Seven’s USS Enterprise-G Star Trek Show

In 2401, Seven of Nine was finally allowed to join Starfleet, thanks to receiving a field commission from Admiral Picard, and society’s slowly-warming attitudes towards xBs. Extensive field experience with the Fenris Rangers and Picard letSeven of Nine skip the Academyand several Starfleet ranks. As Commander Annika Hansen, Seven of Nine served as First Officer to the USS Titan-A’s Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick).Commander Seven—as she preferred to be known—trusted her gut instincts, protected her crew, and acted as a mentor to the Titan’s junior officers, like Ensign Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharp Chestnut).

Star Trek: Legacy - Everything We Know

Star Trek: Picard may have come to an end, but the potential adventures of Starfleet in the 25th century could still continue in Star Trek: Legacy.

Commander Seven of Nine led the USS Titan-A’s defense against a new strain of Borg, aiding the survival of the Federation against Borg and Changelings' combined efforts. For leadership skills and valor while facing impossible circumstances,Captain Shaw recommended that Seven of Nine be promoted to Captain.Captain Seven of Nine was rewarded with said promotion by oldStar Trek: Voyagercrewmate Captain Tuvok (Tim Russ), and command of the Titan-A—now rechristened theUSS Enterprise-G. Fan demand for Captain Seven of Nine’s story afterStar Trek: Picardis high, butStar Trek: Legacyhas yet to receive a greenlight.
