After a three-year silence, Rare has just shared a new image for its upcoming title,Everwild. Rare is the team behind classics likeBanjo Kazooey,Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and, more recently, the popular pirate action adventure title,Sea of Thieves.Everwildis a project that the dev team had reportedly been working on since 2019, but the company has been strangely quiet about their progress, making no official updates in years and raising questions about the game’s future.
Just in time for the holidays,Rare has dropped a new image ofEverwild, making it clear to all that the game is still in active development. The visual was shared on the officialRare Ltd.X account, showing a character and a deer-like animal looking up at a twinkling, lit-up tree surrounded by an ethereal sky. The image is framed by the same character and animal, with their faces turned away from the viewer. Beneath the image are the words “Happy Holidays From Rare.”
Rare’s Holiday Gift To Fans This Year Is An Everwild Image
Rare Presents An “Offering” For Dedicated Fans With No Further Context
The new image forEverwildis not given with any context from Rare, or any further information about the state of the game or its stage in development. The message that accompanies the image is a simple holiday greeting, with somesignature Rare humorthrown into the mix:
“Happy holidays, whoever’s seeing this! Hope you’re closing the year out in style and, as it’s the day of fine gifts and finer food, here’s our offering - a delicious png for you to enjoy! Right, we’re off to eat a Patagotitan’s hypothesised weight in sweets. ‘Til 2025!”
Patagotitan is a dinosaur that lived in Patagonia 100 million years ago. The massive dinosaur is estimated to have weighed nearly 70 tons when it was alive, so Rare is certainly stuffing itself silly with sweets this year. However, this information doesn’t seem to reveal anything aboutEverwildor any ofthe dev team’s other IPs. It’s possible that the reference isa hint atEverwild’ssetting or a nod to what inspired the design of one of the creatures in the game. Or, it could just be Rare simply being silly and have no bearing at all on anything.
The Game Was Allegedly Rebooted Early In Its Development
It’s not unusual these days for a game to spend a long time in development, butEverwild’searly announcement and subsequent silence was still a cause for concern for fans. The game received a breathtaking cinematic trailer in July of 2020 on theXboxYouTube channel, catching the attention of many fans with its beautiful visuals and mysterious presentation. The game offered players a glimpse into the world ofEverwildwithout giving too much away about what to actually expect from the title.
However, early in its development the upcoming game suffered a series of setbacks. The title’s lead creative director resigned in 2020, the game wasreported to be completely redone in 2021, and then all talk of the game ceased. A report fromXbox Erain October of this year revealed thatEverwildwas still alive and well, and at least playable. The holiday picture from Rare featuring new art fromEverwildseems to be a quiet confirmation that the title is still in development, which likely means that Rare will be sharing further updates on the title in 2025.
