How Nope, Freddy Fazbear And Dozens Of Other Fan-Favorites Fit Into Funko Fusion

Screen Rant: Arthur, what makes something likeFive Nights at Freddy’sthe right fit forFunko Fusion?

Arthur Parsons: The whole purpose ofFunko Fusionwas to bring fandoms together. Everyone likes different stuff. We’re all nerds, we’re all geeks. We all like TV shows, movies, comics, you name it. But everyone likes different stuff. When we sat out on the journey withFunko Fusion, we were looking at it going, ‘We have to try and find a space where we can bring people to play together that like different stuff.’

We looked at all the NBC Universal properties and then we kind of went a bit crazy. There’s over 20 IP [in the game]. We’ve got things from back in the seventies all the way right through today. The IP mix is amazing. It was basically us picking what we were fans of, whether it’sJaws, whether it’sFive Nights of Freddy’s, whether it’sInvincible, whether it’sScott Pilgrim,Hot Fuzz,Shaun of the Dead— you name it.

Screen Rant: I’m not going to lie, I’m very excited to be able to play as Shaun. But I’m also excited to see thatNopeis among the titles represented in the game. What’s it like working with that team, on their first expansion ofNopeinto gaming?

Funko Fusion Game 2

Arthur Parsons: That’s the power of NBC Universal. The game’s been in development for over three years, but as we were working through content… there were conversations with filmmakers who were already involved. I guess someone at Monkey Paw heard about it and they came to us saying, “How about havingNopein the game?' It’s terrific, and we’ve had a great relationship with Monkey Paw… that was a really nice accident, a happy accident I guess… It’s nice to bring movies like that along with your mainstream blockbusters — yourJurassic Worlds, oryourBack to the Futures.

Finding Freddy Fazbear’s Voice

Screen Rant: Kellen, this crossover means getting to bring back Freddy Fazbear!

Kellen Goff: Yeah! There are two Freddys in the game. Freddy Funko and Freddy, I’m very grateful [Freddy Fazbear] found his way in here.

Kai Chisaki, Overhaul, looking freaked out in My Hero Academia.

Screen Rant:Funko Fusionis a very different kind of game than we’ve seen Freddy in before. How is it approaching the character from this new perspective of a more action-packed game likeFunko Fusion? It’s effectively a different kind of Freddy.

Kellen Goff: It very much is. It’s an acting challenge too, to be sure. This is the first time I’ve ever given a voice to the original Freddy, the original Brown Freddie fromthe first [Five Nights at Freddy’sgame]. So over the years, I’ve been sort of mulling over what he might sound like.

All of that stuff sort of gets thrown out the window when he gets turned into a little two-foot big or two-inch big little figurine there. He’s very animated, he’s very all over the place. [10:10 Games] used to make theLegoGames. I grew up with those and I admit I did a little research — I played through those and that’s the feel. [Funko Fusion] brought that nostalgic Lego feel to it.

Casting Clancy Brown For Eddy Funko

Screen Rant: Arthur, you’ve got obviously got to create a pretty big villain to bring all these characters together, and that’s what we’ve got with Eddy Funko. So of course, you go and cast someone like Clancy Brown for the role.

Arthur Parsons: [Laughter] We did, yeah. We had all these great IPs to play with, and then we had to look at it and go, ‘Well, how are we going to tie those IP together?’ When you’ve got something like aJurassic WorldalongsideM.E.G.A.N.Chucky,Xena: Warrior Princess,Masters of the Universe… how do you make that make sense? So that’s where we came up with this sort of narrative backbone with Eddy Funko, who’s everything that’s bad in the world. It’s almost like all the haters crushed into a character. That’s what Eddy’s all about.

As opposed to Freddy, who’s the happy-go-lucky, Richie fromHappy Dayskind of character. It’s almost like all the haters crushed into a character. That’s what Eddy’s all about. As opposed to Freddy, who’s the happy-go-lucky, Richie fromHappy Dayskind of character. When we concepted Eddy and came up with his backstory, how he looks and appears, we were like, ‘Who’s it going to be?’ Our CEO John just instantly went, ‘It’s Clancy. If you want the ultimate bad guy, it has to be Clancy.’

The great thing is, we’ve worked with Clancy a number of times. Going all the way back to Dr. Neo Cortex in theCrash Bandicootgames that I worked on in 2001. We’ve worked with him quite a lot over the years. [We] messaged him and Clancy was like, ‘Whatever you guys are cooking up, I’m always interested.’ It’s great to hear Eddy brought to life in that way. He’s very sinister.

Kellen Goff Teases My Hero Acadamia’s Upcoming Arc

Screen Rant: Kellen, you also play Kai inMy Hero Academia. I’ve got to ask, what can you tease for the next arc?

Kellen Goff: Oh my goodness. Well, I will say it’s going to get very, very dark, very quick. Prepare the tissue boxes. I don’t know how much else I can say without getting Crunchyroll mad with me. [Laughter]

Dream Crossovers With Funko Fusion

Screen Rant: Even outside the Universal NBC library, are there any other titles you’d love to see thrown intoFunko Fusion?

Kellen Goff: Oooh, eitherBen 10orTransformers. I was talking in another interview. It would be cool to have a giant 10-foot Transformer… I don’t know how hard that would be to program.

Arthur Parsons: I had my number one choice inHe-Man. In 1983, I was eight years old, on Saturday mornings watching that show. That was first on my list. Then you look at everything else we’ve got in it, we pretty much got everything we wanted. There are a couple of things that we’ve got in the game we still haven’t revealed… I don’t know when we’re going to reveal it, but one of them was in the very first conversation I had with Jason at Funko. We were spit balling what to put in it. This was something we talked about. I literally grabbed my Funko Pop from my desk while on a teams call and went, ‘We have to do this.’

He was like, ‘Hell yeah, we have to do that.’ We can’t talk about it yet. So I think that’s going to be a really cool one because people won’t even expect that one. We want people to let us know. As an independent developer, we are just doing this and we’re engaging with the community and encouraging people get in touch. Join our discord, follow our socials, and message us. We read everything. So we want to hear from people as to what they want in the game.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a multimedia horror franchise created by Scott Cawthon that began with the first entry in the video game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s. The core story of the franchise focuses on a pizza franchise known as “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza,” a kid-friendly entertainment center with animatronic hosts. The stores are closed when the animatronics begin to go berserk, slaying some of their guests. However, for most entries, a security guard is tasked with observing them at night, completely unaware of the horrible history behind the mysterious, murderous robots.
