Almost 56 years afterRosemary’s Baby’s release, its ending has become all the more disturbing and profoundly unsettling. Roman Polanski’sRosemary’s Babyhas a negative but well-rounded ending that shows how, despite being fearful of how her child is the Anti-Christ, Rosemary accepts to be his mother. While the movie does not delve into the details of how she feels and why she takes the role, it is hard not to believe that her motherly instincts kicked in even though she knew what the cult intended to achieve with the Anti-Christ’s birth.

In the original Ira Levin novel, a part of Rosemary also believes that even though her child is Satan’s son, she might be able to nurture him to become a force for good. Rosemary’s hope is sad because it highlights how she is fighting a losing battle. It underscores how helplessly she is torn between her innate desire to look after her child and the horrifying truth about his origins. This makesRosemary’s Baby’s endingincredibly disturbing. However, over five decades after the movie’s release, its ending has become even more horrifying.

Apartment 7A Shows Rosemary Was Far More Helpless Than She Seemed

Rosemary never considers getting an abortion inRosemary’s Babybecause she does not understand the end goal of the cult’s plan until the film’s final moments. However, inRosemary’s Baby’s prequel,Apartment 7A, Terry considers getting an abortion after learning the truth about the cult. She visits a local woman to proceed with the medical procedure. Unfortunately, to her shock, as soon as the woman approaches her, her body starts twisting and turning, as if an invisible force is constricting her. The woman then falls to the ground before Terry flees the scene with her friend.

The prequel proves Rosemary was helplessly bound to her harrowing situation and had no choice but to accept her child inRosemary’s Baby’s ending moments.

InApartment 7A’s endingarc, Terry also threatens the Castevets by pointing a knife towards her stomach. However, this time around, the invisible demonic force takes over her and prevents him from hurting herself and the Anti-Christ. These moments inApartment 7Ahighlight thatRosemary never had a choice. Even if she had known she was giving birth to the Anti-Christ, she would have been powerless to change her fate. The prequel proves Rosemary was helplessly bound to her harrowing situation and had no choice but to accept her child inRosemary’s Baby’s ending moments.

Why Rosemary’s Baby’s Ending Is Better Than Apartment 7A’s

It’s Less Predictable

Rosemary’s Babyreveals Terry’s fate in its opening arc. Owing to this, viewers familiar with the original 1968 movie already know what will happen toTerry inApartment 7A’s ending. When it comes to Rosemary and her baby’s fate in the parent film, however, it is hard not to wonder what the future holds for them since the film effectively instills a sense of paranoia and confusion in the viewer. Even afterRosemary’s Baby’s credits start rolling, it is hard not to wonder what the future holds for Rosemary and her child because the movie concludes on an ambiguous note.

Apartment 7A Cast Guide: Every New & Returning Rosemary’s Baby Character

Apartment 7A not only introduces a new set of characters but, unsurprisingly, also marks the return of several familiar faces from Rosemary’s Baby.

The same cannot be said aboutApartment 7Abecause viewers already know what the Castevets will do after Terry’s demise.Apartment 7A’s mid-credits scenealso establishes this by portraying how the Castevets set their eyes on Rosemary after Terry’s death. WhileApartment 7Ais still a fairly satisfying extension ofRosemary’s Baby’s universe, it comes nowhere close to being as iconic and memorable as the 1968 film.
