Summary

One key star fromPresumed Innocentwill not be coming back in season 2, hinting at the direction the legal thriller will be heading in the forthcoming episodes.Presumed Innocentseason 1 endedon a definitive note, with Rusty being found not guilty before learning his daughter was the real culprit behind Carolyn’s murder. However, even before the series ended, it was renewed for season 2. However, it was unclear if any stars from the original episodes would be reprising their roles for the new case.

Speaking withIndieWire,Peter Sarsgaard, who portrayed Tommy Molto inPresumed Innocent, revealed he wouldn’t be coming back for season 2.The actor explained he feels like the character’s story has come to an end, having no intention to continue playing the character into the next batch of episodes. Check out what Sarsgaard had to say about his decision not to return below:

Rusty looking frustrated next to Tommy looking concerned in Presumed Innocent season 1

I’m not really that interested in sequels. I think I’ve only ever done one season of anything… I think I’m a one-season person.

I tell my kids this sometimes, maybe I’ve done 90, 100 different things over the years between movies, TV shows, and plays. I say, ‘I’m very good at saying hello and saying goodbye.’ There’s a very valuable thing in saying goodbye because then you have to look for another source of inspiration and then you change. I get asked all the time, did I gain weight, lose weight, grow a beard, all of that. I’m sort of just doing all of that all the time. If I were playing something over and over again, I would have to keep coming back to the same territory. I’ve actually found that acting has been really valuable in terms of just being a person, and I think part of it is that I’ve had all of these really interesting experiences not just playing different characters but collaborating with different people.

What Peter Sarsgaard Not Coming Back Means For Presumed Innocent Season 2

Sarsgaard’s decision not to return as Tommy impliesPresumed Innocentseason 2will have new characters in the spotlight, not necessitating his return to the show. Whilestar Jake Gyllenhaal will remain an executive producer on the show, it has yet to be confirmed if he’ll be playing Rusty once more. When the series was renewed, Apple TV+ confirmed season 2 will focus on a different case, meaning characters from season 1 might not be required to come back for the story to work.

It would make the most sense for thecast ofPresumed Innocentto change with season 2, especially now that Rusty’s case has been resolved with no questions left unanswered.Season 1 focused not only on the case itself, but the way it impacted the lives of characterssurrounding the accusation and subsequent trial. While bringing back some characters could make sense depending on the story’s direction, old faces could take away from how new ones will be impacted by the upcoming storyline.

This 1 Decision Will Make Or Break Presumed Innocent Season 2

Apple TV’s recent limited series Presumed Innocent was such a hit that it will not be “limited” anymore, posing challenges for an unexpected season 2.

While Tommy won’t be coming back, though, it could make sense for Rusty to return if he decides to continue working within the legal system. MaybePresumed Innocentseason 2 can see him trying to help other people wrongly convicted of different crimes, not requiring other characters to return while giving the show proper continuity. It’s also possible the show will simply be an anthology series, with every new case unrelated to the next. For now, Sarsgaard’s decision not to come back is a sign the next episodes will feel different no matter how the show proceeds.

It’s unclear ifPresumed Innocentseason 2 will be based on existing source material, or follow an original story.
