A character that was briefly hinted at inGuardians of the Galaxyhas finally made theirMCUdebut over a decade later. Marvel Studios is known for their long-term vision and their ability to plan ahead, finding ways to link their projects together even if they are released years apart from each other. This was why the Infinity Saga felt so rewarding, as it was the result of years of build-up. The studio has been trying to do the same throughout the Multiverse Saga, and one 2014 Easter Egg has finally paid off.
The MCU’s most recent release,Agatha All Along, introduced Aubrey Plaza’s Death, who is a cosmic entity and the personification of death. Her identity wasn’t officially confirmed until the last few episodes, which made for great suspense, but some fans may have been waiting for her arrival inthe MCU timelinefor much longer. Death was actually hinted at in aGuardians of the GalaxyEaster Egg in 2014, and it’s surprising that it’s taken Marvel this long to pay it off.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Teased Death As A Cosmic Avatar
In the opening scene ofGuardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord is shown on the planet Morag trying to steal an artifact. The Orb is housed in a temple with security measures that he has to bypass, which would make sense since the Orb was later revealed to house the Power Stone. As Peter Quill enters the temple, there are murals on the wall detailing various cosmic forces vying for control of the Infinity Stones. The entities depicted included Entropy, Infinity, Eternity, and none other than Death herself.
The murals aren’t a huge focus of the scene as they only appeared in the background, but as with most things in the MCU, there was always a reason for it being shown. Marvel likely knew that the cosmic avatars would eventually play a part in the franchise, so they took the opportunity to drop a subtle Easter Egg. Death is a unique character and a fascinating concept of a cosmic entity who was always bound for an MCU debut, and it feels rewarding to know that Marvel already had her in mind back in 2014.

It’s Taken Marvel 10 Years To Pay Off On Death As A Character
Marvel had an opportunity to introduce Death to the MCU much earlier than they did. The character had a relationship with Thanos in the comics, but the studio didn’t decide to adapt that storyline. Instead, other plans were created for Lady Death, resulting in her debut coming far later in 2024. TheGuardians of the GalaxyEaster Egg was such a brief one that most viewers likely didn’t even realize what the murals behind Star-Lord were depicting. However, for the sharp-eyed fans, their anticipation for Death’s introduction would’ve started 10 years ago.
How Powerful Death Is Compared To Thanos & Marvel’s Gods
Agatha All Along may have introduced one of the most powerful characters in the MCU, raising the question of how Death’s power compares to other gods.
For the fans who have been waiting since the initial hint at Death in 2014, they have finally been rewarded after 10 years. Though she wasn’t involved in a comic-accurate Thanos storyline,Agatha All Alongwas a great project to introduce the character in that showed her emotional depth in just a few episodes. The series has clearly set Plaza’s Death up for future MCU appearances, perhaps alongside other cosmic entities as was depicted inGuardians of the Galaxy.
