Summary

Nearly a decade afterFallout 4’s initial release, a player has found an interesting exploit that lets players increase their chance of hitting with VATS dramatically. VATS is a mechanic that allows players to take newerFalloutgames back to their turn-based rootsby essentially pausing combat and allowing the player to aim for a certain part of an enemy’s body. Each body part is given a percentage which indicates how likely it is that the player will successfully hit the enemy.

Though VATS is a nice option, there are plenty of times when the chance to hit is just too low for it to be useful. However, thanks to one player’s new trick, as long as a shot has any chance of hitting, they can now almost guarantee that it will land. This takes a little bit of getting used to, and some quick button inputs, but players who get the hang of it will quickly find out justhow helpful VATS can bewhen it dramatically increases their accuracy.

Fallout 4 players wanting more freedom while moving around in combat need to check out this mod which introduces systems like sliding and momentum.

Watching For The Right Camera Angle Allows VATS To Hit Almost Every Time

Players Can Cancel Shots They Know Are Less Likely To Hit

When players initiate a shot in VATS, the camera will cut to one of two types of angles. It will either show a view from over the player’s shoulder, or it will dramatically zoom in on the front of the player. When the camera begins to dramatically zoom in,this is a strong indication that the shot is going to hit the target. The only time this doesn’t seem to be true is when the enemy happens to step behind cover or another object gets in the way first.

By paying attention to these camera angles, Reddit userPaddyVurealized that they could cheeseFallout 4to almost always guarantee themselves a hit in VATS. For a brief moment before the player’s character shoots in VATS, there is an option to abort the shot. PaddyVu realized that they could abort any shot that was from the over-the-shoulder camera angle. Then, they wouldrepeat their attempt in VATS until they got the dramatic zoom shotwhich indicates they are going to hit.

This tactic allows players to cancel VATS shots that they are pretty sure are going to miss, saving both ammo and Action Points. Then, they can almost guarantee a hit, even when the chance is low. If players want to avoid tedium, they would be better off making sure there is at least a 20–30% chance to hit on shots they take, otherwise, they may have to cycle through quite a few animations. However, there is another way to improve one’s output with this tactic that can make this process even more powerful.

A Luck Build Makes VATS More Effective In Fallout 4

Luck Has A Lot Of Perks That Help VATS

There are quite a few Luck perks inthat make VATS more effective, which is especially helpful forFallout 4gunslinger builds. A lot of these perks have to do with the Critical meter, which itself is related to Luck. Attacks using VATS help fill the Critical bar at a rate that is determined by the player’s Luck stat. Players can then unleash the powerful Critical attack once the bar is full, which is a guaranteed hit and will bypass any resistance the enemy may have.

Players with a Luck stat value of nine can also take a perk called Four Leaf Clover, whichmakes every hit in VATS have a chance to fully fill their Critical meter. By using the exploit demonstrated by PaddyVu, players will be hitting in VATS more often, which increases their chance of filling up their Critical meter with this perk. Players can then use the Better Criticals perk to make their crits do even more damage and the Critical Banker perk to store up multiple Critical hits to use against tougher enemies.

Another good Luck perk related to VATS is Grim Reaper’s Sprint which givesevery VATS kill a chance to restore all the player’s action pointsand refill the critical meter at a higher level. When players can almost guarantee they will hit an enemy with VATS, they can easily ensure they kill enemies while using it, and give themselves the best chance of activating this perk. Players can also take Mysterious Stranger; since they will be using VATS so often with this build, it is more likely the Stranger will show up to help.

This Tactic Allows Fallout 4 Players To Dump Certain Stats

Players Can Take Less Agility Or Perception Thanks To This Exploit

A player’s chance to hit in VATS is determined in part by their Perception score. However, when players know they have a good chance to hit even with a lower percentage, they don’t need to worry about specializing in Perception nearly as much. Alternatively, a player might decide they don’t need as much Agility, since the cost of VATS isn’t as big of a deal when they don’t need to take as many shots. Or a player may just dump Strength and make Dogmeat carry everything, since they know they’ll never use melee.

Whatever route players want to take, specializing hard in Luck and using this exploit can free up some points that players might otherwise feel they need to invest in making VATS more effective. Luck can also make it easier to find ammo, and since players won’t be missing as often, this is a very efficient build for managing resources.Fallout 4players looking for a new build to try out should definitely consider this one.
