Across the world, DC metahumans are being taken out by Amanda Waller’s premierandroid team Task Force VII, and it’s forcing heroes like Dick Grayson to confront their worst nightmares.
In a preview forAbsolute Power: Task Force VII #4by Pornsak Pichetshote and Claire Roe,Batman’s greatest contingency Failsafetracks Voodoo down through the Court of Owls' maze. Elsewhere, in the maze’s conference wing, Nightwing gathers with Robin Tim Drake, The Ray, and Miss Martian. Dick compliments Tim on managing to form a resistance and get his hands on weaponry.
However, Nightwing seems perturbed at Tim’s choice for their base. Robin rationalizes his decision, thinking Failsafe would never think to look for them there, given the Bat-Family’s past,but Nightwing pauses as he looks at an Owl mask.
Nightwing’s New Base is an Abandoned Court of Owls' Lair
Things have gone from bad to worse in the DC Universe. In her bid to end metahumans for good, Amanda Waller spent months making deals and acquiring assets that could help her see her goals through. When she finally had all the pieces in place, Waller unleashed Task Force VII onto the world and had them drain as many metahumans as they possibly could. Heroes as powerful as Superman, Wonder Woman, and even Doctor Fate were powerless against the Amazo team.Nightwing briefly rallied his fellow heroes at the Fortress of Solitude, but even that sanctum wasn’t safe from Waller.
Fans know that there are few things that can shake Nightwing to his core like the Court of Owls. After all, Dick Grayson was, at one point in his life, destined to become one of the Talons, loyal soldiers who serve the Court of Owls' interests. Dick has even fought his paternal great-grandfather, William Cobb, another one of the Court’s Talons. Nightwing is understandably perturbed to be in the Court’s domain, even if it is abandoned. But with Waller closing off nearly every escape route possible, thedesperation among heroes like Nightwing is growing as their options dwindle.
Nightwing Has No Choice But to Confront His Past to Save His Future
As the saying goes “Beggars can’t be choosers”. Tim did his best to find a suitable spot for the resistance’s base, but this is an emergency situation and there’s not much time. Sure, Nightwing would probably prefer to not be in the lair of a society that once had plans to control him, but there’s not much else out there for him. The best play right now is for the resistance to gather themselves and prepare a counterattack. Hopefully, this return to a shady part ofNightwing’spast will give him and his allies a good chance at stopping Failsafe.

Nightwing is the superhero moniker taken up by Dick Grayson, upon his aging out of the Robin role and becoming a superhero of his own. Inspired by the original Kryptonian hero of the same name, Grayson has risen to comic book immortality with the identity, earning respect as one of the greatest leaders in the DC Universe.
