Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story Trailer Poses One Major Question

Who Are The Real Monsters?

In the Menendez brothers,Monsterseason 2 has found equally interesting subjectsthat could rival season 1’s Jeffrey Dahmer and continue to provide a nuanced exploration of what compelled its subjects to commit such monstrous acts. While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune,Lyle and Erik Menendez maintain they killed their parentsbecause they abused them physically, emotionally, and sexually for years. Much of that abuse is explicitly shown or hinted at in the trailer.

The trailer also previews much of the Menendez brothers' sensationalized trial.Lyle and Erik were initially tried separately, but both trials ended in deadlocked juries. They were then retried together, but were prevented from mentioning their abuse during the trial. As a result, a single jury found them both guilty, and they were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. To this day, the brothers maintain that their actions were driven by fear resulting from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
