Mistbornisn’t shy about killing off characters, butone death fromBrandon Sanderson’s booksis glossed over too quickly— and the upcoming movie adaptation can finally do it justice. The originalMistborntrilogy has some of the highest stakes inSanderson’s entire Cosmere, with the main characters toppling a tyrannical empire and dealing with the godly destruction that follows. There are world-shattering stakes throughoutMistbornEra 1, so it’s no surprise that it features some major character deaths. However, not all of them are given the weight they deserve.
While Kelsier’s death is one of themost important scenes inThe Final Empire, the deaths of his crew members don’t have as much of an impact on the plot. That said, there’s one person from Kelsier’s crew whose loss should have been a bigger deal in the books. The Well of Ascensionkills off several supporting characters during the Siege of Luthadel. Unfortunately, these deaths get lost in the chaos of the Koloss attacking the city. One of them should have caused more problems after the battle, though, especially when it came to managing Elend’s empire.

Dox’s Death Doesn’t Get Enough Attention In The Mistborn Books
Dockson is one of the most important members of Kelsier’s crew, thoughyou wouldn’t know it from how briefly his death is addressed inThe Well of Ascension. While Dox’s final POV chapter paints a realistic picture of his end, it’s less believable that the crew moves on so quickly after losing him. In general, the characters who fall duringThe Well of Ascensionaren’t mourned enough in the aftermath of the Siege of Luthadel. This is true of Clubs, Tindwyl, and Dox — but Dox’s role in the crew makes glossing over his death even stranger.
Mistborn’s surviving characters hardly even mourn their friends afterThe Well of Ascension, and they certainly don’t dwell on their losses.

Dox is basically Kelsier’s right-hand man inThe Final Empire,as he’s the one who oversees the practical side of the crew’s plans. Throughout the first twoMistbornbooks, Dox manages the finances and ensures things run smoothly. His role becomes even more important after Kelsier dies, as Elend is inexperienced and needs help running his city. And although Elend becomes a more effective leader inThe Well of Ascension, you’d think the loss of Dox would have a more noticeable effect on him and the remainder of the crew.
10 Things The Mistborn Movie Must Get Right About The Books
The Mistborn movie will need to capture certain elements of Brandon Sanderson’s books if it hopes to find success when it hits theaters.
Unfortunately,Mistborn’s surviving characters hardly even mourn their friends afterThe Well of Ascension, and they certainly don’t dwell on their losses. This is a shame, as exploring their grief and presenting them with new obstacles would have made the sequel more interesting. It’s likely Sanderson didn’t have time for all this with so much else going on.Perhaps the movie adaptation can expand on Dox’s death, even with its limited runtime.
Mistborn’s Movie Adaptation Can Finally Do Dox’s Death Justice After All These Years
It Can Pack A Greater Punch Emotionally & Impact The Story More
TheMistbornmoviecan finally do Dox’s death justice, 17 years afterThe Well of Ascension’s debut. For one, the upcoming adaptation can make this moment more tragic, ensuring it packs a greater emotional punch than it does in the books. While things happen quickly in the midst of a battle, there should be some time dedicated to mourning Dox and the other crew memberslost during the secondMistbornbook.
In his annual State of the Sanderson blog update, Sanderson revealed theMistbornmovie is currently paused. However, he seemed hopeful that work on the adaptation would pick up again soon.
Additionally,The Well of AscensionandHero of Agesmovies should show the impact Dox’s death has on the crew from a more practical standpoint. They’d need to find someone who can organize and manage their operations as well as him, or they’d face the challenge of learning to do so themselves. Either way, his death would hardly be forgotten about so soon. Hopefully, theMistbornadaptation acknowledges that.
