Netflix’s explosive action movie franchiseExtractionis set to expand with the addition of a TV show calledMercenarystarringLupin’s Omar Sy. Debuting in 2020, theExtractionfilms star Chris Hemsworth as Aussie mercenary Sam Rake, who is hired by various clients to help free family members who have been taken hostage or imprisoned in various locales around the globe. Though hardly the most groundbreaking movies of all time,Extractionand its sequel deliver the perfect balance of over-the-top action with Netflix’s signature big-budget film style that has made the streamer a destination for blockbuster movies.
With Joe Russo (one half of the filmmaking duo) penning the scripts for the first two flicks, Netflix struck gold withExtractionas an ongoing franchise. WithExtraction 3green-lit, the streamer has now opted to go in another direction by announcing a TV series set within the same universe. While many details are still scant regarding the latest mission, the Russo brothers will help oversee the project with franchise director Sam Hargrave. Unlike the films which follow Hemsworth’s Rake,Mercinaryhas tapped a new action hero lead which opens the door for endless story options.

We have just announced a green light for a series calledMercenary, which is part of theExtractionuniverse and starring Omar Sy and we’re thrilled about that one.
It’s an exciting opportunity to pursue a long-form narrative that explores many of the same themes that the first twoExtractionstouched on will sort of come at a singular mission through multiple perspectives. And it’s interesting to see how different mercenaries will have different allegiances and agendas and will be forced to make certain decisions that may be helpful or harmful to others.

So we’re super excited about that one. Omar [Sy] is at the core of it. Glen Mazzara is show running it, who’s brilliant, and we start production in September.

Mercenary: The Extraction TV Series Story Details
Another Extraction Mission Is Coming Soon
Cy’s mercenary won’t just be fighting against terrorists, but also against the emotional damage that his line of work creates.
As the name implies, theExtractionfranchise follows a formula in which the hero must extract his targets who have been kidnapped or are being held prisoner in various parts of the world.Mercenaryis no different, andwill follow Cy’s character as he heads to Libya to save hostages who are being held there. However, like the two movies, there’s more to the story than a simple rescue operation, and the show will feature plenty of twists, double crosses, and introspective moments.
Netflix dropped a synopsis for the series:
Set in the high-octane world ofExtraction, this action thriller follows a mercenary (Omar Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.
As the synopsis implies, Cy’s mercenary won’t just be fighting against terrorists, but also against the emotional damage that his line of work creates. On top of that, his mission likely has multiple layers, and he’s probably being used by some larger faction whether he knows it or not. This offers a unique opportunity for the series to really dig deep into the emotional core of theExtractionfranchise, something that isn’t possible in a two-hour movie. Further details concerning theMercenaryand its story are expected soon.
