After Kacey comes back into Mickey’s life, the two decide to work together to solve the mystery. He shows disdain for the first woman they found dead and doesn’t see her as a real person, something that Mickey had a huge problem with.Lafferty also has huge doses of insulin at his house, which he was using to kill the women. Earlier on in the series, Laura pointed out that the killer was a police officer. This clue, more than anything else, is what led Mickey to Lafferty.

In the first episode of the series, Mickey worries that her sister, who had disappeared from the streets of Kensington, might have been taken by the serial killer. In fact,finding Kacey is one of the reasons Mickey is so adamant about exposing the murderersince that’s the only person who could lead her to her younger sister.

Instead of just being a crime drama,Long Bright Riverexplores how the system fails certain people, whether it is minority groups or people living with substance addiction. When the first woman is found dead in the series,the captain and other police officers in the Philadelphia Police Department don’t seem to careand immediately rule it as an overdose without investigating further.
