Based on the best-selling fantasy book by Tomi Adeyemi, who also adapted it to the screen, the upcoming film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) andfollows a young heroine attempting to restore magic to her kingdomthat was brutally stolen by an oppressive regime. Now that filming has finally begun,Children of Blood and Boneis officially on its way to becoming a movie, and it should be able to make its scheduled release date in January 2027. The fantasy book has endured a long road to the big screen, as it was originally optioned for a film adaptation prior to its publication in 2018 by Fox 2000. However, after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox and dissolved Fox 2000,the project was moved to Lucasfilm, which eventually let the film rights expire. In 2022, Paramount picked up the rights.
With a massive fanbase, star-studded cast, and cameras finally rolling, Children of Blood and Bone is on track to become the next big fantasy franchise, following in the footsteps of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
Last month,a cast full of both newcomers and acclaimed actors was announced. Like many fantasy film franchises,Children of Blood and Bonehas chosen relatively unknown actors for its lead roles. Thuso Mbedu, known forThe Woman King, will portray the protagonist, Zélie Adebola, while Tosin Cole takes on the role of her brother, Tzain. The most recognizable name among the lead cast isAmandla Stenberg (The Acolyte), who will play Princess Amari, with Damson Idris cast as her brother, Prince Inan.
