Mythic Questis a high concept comedy show which features a workplace comedy set inside a video game publishing company, but is there a real game that the series draws its namesake from?Mythic Questfirst began airing on Apple TV+ in 2020, and the show immediately grabbed attention for the impressive visual styles, the quirky characters, and the interoffice relationships. Similar to shows likeThe Office, andIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the biggest draw comes from the characters who occupy the space.

However, whileThe Officefollows employees of a paper sales company, andIASIPsees a group of friends who work in or gather around a bar, the company inMythic Questhighlights something totally different. The studio is a large video game publisher which creates numerous games and a platform for people to engage with online, buttheir flagship game,Mythic Quest, is the thing that took them from obscurity to being major players in the industry.

Mythic Quest Is Not A Real Video Game

Mythic Quest Is Nothing More Than A Mythical Concept For A Game

However,Mythic Questis not a real game. The MMORPG from the series is entirely fictional, drawing inspiration from various games, but in order to give the show the maximum amount of flexibility and freedom for issues to discuss regarding the games' industry, it’s anambiguous creation that has various mechanics and constant new additions, updates, side quests, expansions, and in-game purchases.

Will you be checking out Mythic Quest’s anthology series, Side Quest?

I really enjoy Mythic Quest, so I was delighted to see Apple TV+ announce Side Quest’s release date along with season 4’s. “A Dark Quiet Death” is one of my favorite Mythic Quest episodes, so I’m really intrigued that Side Quest’s anthology format supposedly mirrors this type of installment. I love anything by Rob McElhenney, and the fact Charlie Day and Megan Ganz are also coming back for this makes it even better.

If the show was based on a real game, it would likely force the series to adjust around the games unique mechanics, and likewise, if exciting developments were announced on the show, it may lead to fans expecting those updates in-game. In this way, it’s a lot less restrictive, and the show has room to play with anything that becomes a hot-button topic in the video games industry. And it also helps that the show has its ownconnections to real life video game publishers, which provides a foundation for the issues addressed on the show.

Mythic Quest Has A Direct In With A Major Video Game Publisher

Ubisoft approachedRob McElhenney to createMythic Quest, one of the creators and stars ofIASIP, regarding creating a show that is set in the video game industry space. With McElhenney’s comedy skills, and a team of writers and a talented cast, they wereable to take inspiration from Ubisoft, and create a vision for a show that made it a reality. And of course, as a successful video game studio itself, Ubisoft has been able to collaborate and contribute to the show by creating video game assets that get woven into the series as animated transition cards featuring unique characters and styles.

Ubisoft has also been able to consult on the show, offering advice on technical matters, and ensuring the quality and authenticity of the show stays at a high standard. This has resulted in a wonderfulcollaboration that allowed a studio like Ubisoft to break out of the mold of creating only video games, and begin to take a multimedia approach to their storytelling. However, the series is still spearheaded by people like McElhenney, with Ubisoft’s role being less supervisory, and more focused on consultation and support in the background.

Mythic Quest Spinoff Mere Mortals Coming to Apple TV+

Mere Mortals, a spinoff of Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest, is on the way from series writers Ashly Burch, Katie McElhenney, and John Howell Harris.

World of Warcraft, often abbreviated toWoWhas a lot incommon withMythic Quest, which is often abbreviated toMQ. The game features extensive character creation, with classes, races, and customization options. There are massive maps to explore, and a range of quests and raids to take part in. Players can adventure alone, or, they can team up with others online and work together to earn new rewards. There are also huge expansions that introduce new mechanics, missions, raids, boss battles and more. All of this closely matchesWoW, which makes sense for a game that is supposed to be so widely popular and ambitious asMythic Quest.
