I can’t say I’m surprised by Piper’s final choice inThe White Lotusseason 3, but I’m definitely disappointed. As per usual, show creator Mike White filledThe White Lotusseason 3’s castwith a mix of veteran actors and thrilling young talent.Among the young stars was Sarah Catherine Hook, who played the middle siblingofthe Ratliff family, Piper. For most of the season, her fascination with Buddhism was the guiding force for their trip to Thailand.

The White Lotusseason 3’s endingwas filled with shocking twists, but one of the most cynical and deep-cutting was Piper’s final choice. It may not have been one to end in bloodshed or even emotional trauma, but the subtle disappointment was still awful in its own way. Morally good characters are difficult to find inThe White Lotus, especially among the hotel’s guests.

Piper Leaving Thailand & Proving Victoria Right Was A Disappointing End To Her Story

Victoria Ratliff isn’t necessarily the most vicious person inThe White Lotusseason 3, but there is a toxicity that comes with her privilege. Her inability to respect another culture or even remember the name of the country she’s in is played for laughs, but it’s a rather depressing picture of someone who’s a mother to three children. Still, there’s wisdom to her in knowing that Piper, like her, wouldn’t be able to handle living in less desirable conditions without the luxuries she’s used to.

The prospect that she would turn away from that idea at the first hurdle of trouble is disheartening.

Next to Saxon, Piper seems to have turned out decently for a member of her family. She’s introspective enough to realize that her family’s lifestyle is close-minded and entirely flawed, and she demonstrates an interest in improving herself with new experiences. The prospect that she would turn away from that idea at the first hurdle of trouble is disheartening.I would have loved to have seen just one character push themself toward becoming a better person, but I was certainly counting on this ending. It’s just theWhite Lotusstyle.

Either Way, The Choice Is What Would Have Mattered

The Ratliff family was never going to make it very long in Thailand, as they were always going to be cut off from their money imminently. As soon as Piper returned to America, her life would have changed drastically, and she wouldn’t have been able to return any time soon. Sure, it wouldn’t have mattered in a practical sense for her to have pursued the temple as she wanted, but seeing her make that choice and ultimately have it ripped away from her might have been a more compelling choice forThe White Lotus.
