When I first heard that Carrie Underwood would be taking Katy Perry’s place on theAmerican Idolseason 23 judging panel alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, I was ecstatic because I’m one of her biggest fans, but now I’ve changed my mind, andI wonder if she has what it takes to fulfill the role. Carrie wonAmerican Idolseason 4 in 2005 and has since gone on to be one of the most successful winners in the show’s history, selling 85 million records worldwide and releasing 28 number one hits. She’s also one of the most popular and beloved country music stars of all-time.
American Idolseason 23has already begun filming, as Carrie, Luke, and Lionel have judged the auditions, so Carrie has already gotten her feet wet as a judge. When she was cast as a judge, Carrie admitted toGMAthat her problem is that she can’t lie, soshe felt like she would be very honest, but also encouraging, to the contestants. I thought that this was a good thing to balance out Luke and Lionel, who sometimes have a tendency to be too nice to the contestants. However, now that reality has hit andAmerican Idolseason 23 has started filming, I’ve changed my mind based on what Carrie has said about her experience so far.

When I first heard thatCarrie would be replacing Katy, I thought she was an excellent choice because, as a formerAmerican Idolcontestant, she has firsthand experience with how challenging being on the show can be. She was judged by the series' toughest judge, Simon Cowell, and, although he never really judged her too harshly and even predicted that she’d be one of the show’s biggest success stories, she still had to face him every week.
20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now
Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
In an interview withExtra,Carrie admitted that it’s hard for her to say no to the contestants. She said,“Whenever somebody is saying, ‘I can sing another one. I have this song, I have this song,’… I did one yesterday, I was like, ‘Okay.’ But then it’s like that’s even worse because now it’s, ‘It’s still a no.'”

Whenever somebody is saying, “I can sing another one. I have this song, I have this song,”… I did one yesterday, I was like, “Okay.” But then it’s like that’s even worse because now it’s, “It’s still a no.”
I think thatCarrie’s kind demeanor is going to make it very difficult for her to be completely honest with the contestants, even though she said that she would be. Although she means well, by allowing the contestants to sing another song when she already knows that the answer is no, she’s giving them false hope, which is sometimes worse. This could mean that she doesn’t have what it takes to be anAmerican Idoljudge because she can’t detach from the contestants enough in order to reject them outright.

In addition, Carrie has always been known for her kind demeanor. It might be hard for her if her image changes because of being anAmerican Idoljudge. She most likely wouldn’t want people to perceive her in a negative light, which could make it difficult for her to be completely honest with the contestants. Unlike Simon, who reveled in his villain status, Carrie wouldn’t be comfortable with it because she has such a good heart.
Luke Bryan Also Revealed That It’s Difficult For Carrie To Say No To The Contestants
Luke Implied That Carrie Still Has More To Learn About Being An American Idol Judge
Carrie’s fellowAmerican Idolseason 23 judge,Luke, has also noticed that she’s struggling a bit with saying no to the contestants as a judge on the show. He shared,“The thing about it is Carrie has to kind of learn in real time. You kind of have to learn how to be a judge. It’s not like you may go to American Idol Judging School. She went to American Idol Be A Contestant School.”
Luke also acknowledged that Carrie has been doing a wonderful job with theAmerican Idolcontestants, stating,“She’s awesome with the kids. She has the best soul and heart. She’s doing a great job and really settling into the judging table.“However,Luke also revealed that Carrieis having a bit of trouble with her new role. He said,“When she has to say ‘No’ she’s like, ‘I dont wanna tell them no.’ But it’s kind of a part [of the job]. It’s hard when you got a kid that’s young and they haven’t found who they are musically.”
I Just Watched The American Idol Season 23 Preview & It Confirms My Fears About Carrie Underwood As A Judge
I’ve been a Carrie Underwood fan since her American Idol audition, but a new season 23 preview has confirmed my fears about her being a judge.
Although it’s very admirable that Carrie cares about the contestants and doesn’t want to hurt their feelings, I think that this might create a problem for her during the live shows. The judges are often booed by the audience if they offer any negative criticism, and Carrie might find it even harder to speak her mind because of it. I now believe thather experience with what it was like to be a contestant is actually going to hurt her as a judge, rather than help her, because she knows how badly it would’ve stung for her to be rejected by the judges.
Carrie is a superstar with incredible talent and a sweet personality, but, based on what she and Luke have said, I no longer believe that she has what it takes to be anAmerican Idoljudge. If Carrie’s having a hard time saying no to contestants she’s known for only a few minutes at the auditions, I believe that it’ll only be more challenging for her as the season progresses, and she gets to know the contestants even better. However, because I’m such a big Carrie fan, I hope I’m wrong, and she’s the best judge yet.
American Idolseason 23 premieres on Sunday, June 09, 2025, on ABC.
American Idol
Cast
American Idol is a reality singing competition that adds to the international “Idol” brand, conceived initially in the U.K. as Pop Idol. Holding massive auditions across the U.S., American Idol invited several contestants to perform in front of a panel of judges that would determine whether or not they’d go on to future rounds for a chance at competing in the fully televised premiere of the show. Contestants are voted off each week by American participation via voting through various mediums, and the winner of the competition would be given a contract with a record label to secure a future as America’s next musical idol.
