Summary

20th Century Fox changed a major piece of canon for its version ofWolverine, and I hope Marvel Studios keeps this huge change when introducing the clawed mutant officially into theMCU. I loved seeing Hugh Jackman return as Logan inDeadpool & Wolverine, even though he was playing a different version of the character from the one we know and love. The fact thatJackman returned as a variant of Wolverinemeans Marvel Studios could take some creative liberties with the beloved hero, and leave some questions from Fox’sX-Menfranchise unanswered.

Even though Hugh Jackman reprised the role inDeadpool & Wolverine, I want to seeWolverine recast in the MCU.Marvel Studios is developing anX-Menreboot, and there will likely be solo movies focused on crucial members of the team, so a new version of Wolverine will have plenty of opportunities to grow. Similarly toX-Men Origins: Wolverine, the MCU could exploreWolverine’s backstory in the MCU, and, surprisingly, I would love to see one change from the disappointing 2009 movie also implemented in the MCU.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Made Wolverine & Sabretooth Brothers

One of the biggest changes that 20th Century Fox made to Wolverine’s backstory inX-Men Origins: Wolverinewas makingWolverine and Sabretoothhalf-brothers. Wolverine and Sabretooth are not related by blood in Marvel Comics, but come to blows many times, as Sabretooth becomes obsessed with unleashing Wolverine’s feral nature through aggressive means.I love this rivalry in the comics, but I thought it was a very clever move for Fox to make these age-old enemies brothers inX-Men Origins: Wolverine.

For me,the familial connection between Wolverine and Sabretooth inX-Men Origins: Wolverinewas one of the movie’s strongest elements. Perhaps the strongest.Origins, otherwise, was a disappointing mess that did little to enhance Wolverine’s story in theX-Menfranchise, and may have actually harmed it by introducing a whole host of continuity errors and plot holes. Having Wolverine andLiev Schreiber’s Sabretoothbe brothers actually made complete sense for the movie, and, even though this was a huge and controversial change, I want this to be repeated in the MCU.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is one of the most impressive X-Men for a reason, and their are multiple examples featured across his 8 movie appearances.

Why Wolverine & Sabretooth Being Brothers Makes A Lot Of Sense

Although they weren’t connected by a familial bond in Marvel Comics, it makes sense to me that Wolverine and Sabretooth could be brothers. Both are innately animalistic characters, and even take their monikers from different predators, and it makes sense that sibling mutations would be similar. In Wolverine and Sabretooth’s case, both have similar superhuman strength, agility, durability and reflexes, both have a regenerative healing factor that gifts them a long life, and both have razor-sharp, claw-like bones.

Wolverine’s long claws extend from his forearm, while Sabretooth has razor-sharp teeth and claws. In Marvel Comics, it’s insinuated that the pair are connected because they were both part of the Weapon X program. However,I think the brotherly bond is much clearer, better explains their feud, and creates deeper layers of conflict for both characters. This conflict would be great to see repeated with Wolverine’s upcoming reintroduction, especially since there are already a number of entertaining and intensesibling feuds and bonds in the MCU.

Wolverine made his first Marvel Comics appearance in 1974’sThe Incredible Hulk #180, while Sabretooth debuted a few years later, in 1977’sIron Fist #14.

There Are Many Brilliant Sibling Rivalries In The MCU Already

Ever since 2011’sThorintroducedThor and Loki’s rivalry to the MCU, there have been several sibling partnerships seen in the franchise, and Wolverine and Sabretooth would be a great addition. The likes of Gamora and Nebula, Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing, Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova, and Thor, Loki and Hela are some of the most notable sibling duos, each of whom have also battled each other to varying results.I’ve loved watching some of these rivalries develop into close-knit bonds, but Wolverine and Sabretooth could introduce something new to the MCU.

It’s very unlikely that, should they be kept as siblings in the MCU’s future, Wolverine and Sabretooth would ever actually make amends. Sabretooth did form an unlikely alliance with the X-Men in 2006, but this was short-lived and was never going to end in redemption for the psychopathic supervillain. Instead,Wolverine and Sabretooth’s sibling rivalry in the MCU could introduce a feud that never resolves itself, which would mark a huge but welcome change from previous sibling battles in the MCU’s history.

I Want Wolverine & Sabretooth To Be Brothers In The MCU’s Upcoming X-Men Stories

Wolverine and Sabretooth’s connection is not something that 20th Century Fox really developed all too much, so Marvel Studios has the opportunity to make this a clear and ever-present part of Wolverine’s story. 2000’sX-MensawWolverine and Tyler Mane’s Sabretoothfight, while 2009’sX-Men Origins: Wolverineretconned them into brothers, but both of these explorations were surface-level.Wolverine and Sabretooth cross paths regularly in Marvel Comics, so I’d love for this to happen in the MCU, with a possible familial bond making these interactions even more enticing.

Tyler Mane returned as Sabretooth inDeadpool & Wolverine, though it wasn’t revealed whether this version of the villain was the brother to any variant of Wolverine.

Not only would establishingWolverine and Sabretooth as brothers in the MCUbring another wonderful sibling rivalry into the franchise, but this would be an entirely new one that persists, rather than seeing the pair become allies. I reckon this would add huge depth to Wolverine’s story, and help to differentiate the MCU’s newWolverinefrom Hugh Jackman’s previous iteration.I want Sabretooth to also get more development in the MCU than he got in Fox’sX-Menfranchise, and connecting him to one of the most beloved mutants in history would be a great way to accomplish this.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a multimedia superhero franchise that began in 2008 with Paramount’s Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr. The franchise quickly grew in popularity, with Disney eventually buying out Marvel Entertainment in 2009. The MCU consists of dozens of movies and TV shows, most notably Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Loki.
