The reboot ofHighlanderhas reportedly been delayed.Highlanderwas originally a 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert and directed by Russell Mulcahy. It is a dark fantasy film about a Scottish swordsman who has to confront his final immortal opponent. In addition to Lambert,Highlanderfeatured a leading cast including Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, Roxanne Hart, and Beatie Edney. In the years since its release, aHighlanderreboot was announced, with an updated cast that would star Henry Cavill and be directed by theJohn Wickfranchise’s Chad Stahelski.

As perTheWrap, theHighlanderreboot has reportedly been delayed.According to the source, this is a result of delays in another major Stahelski project,Ballerina, causingHighlanderto be pushed further down the pipeline. Reshoots ofBallerinatook Stahelski and his team two or three months, which in turn caused development onHighlanderto be pushed out. The exact timeline implications forHighlanderhave yet to be revealed, but insiders suggest that theBallerinareshoots pushed back the production at least five months.

What These Delays Mean For The Highlander Reboot

Highlander’s Filming Timeline Is Unclear

The delays toBallerinahave been significant overall. TheJohn Wickspinoff was originally set for release in June 2024, but then saw its release delayed an entire year. Now, theBallerinareshoots are done, and the film is slated for a June 2025 release, so further delays toHighlandershould be minimal. From the sounds of this report, though,it seems likeBallerina’s reshoots have already impactedHighlander’s development.

Ballerina: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know About The John Wick Spinoff

Following the outstanding success of the first four John Wick films, the ever-popular action franchise is getting a spinoff in the form of Ballerina.

This is not great news for theHighlanderreboot, because as it stands, the film did not yet have a release date. The reboot has already been a long time coming, as it was announced in 2008 before being confirmed by Lionsgate in 2023. Earlier this year, it was revealed thatHighlanderwould begin filming in Scotland in January 2025. Thelatest report on the delays did not specify to what extent this would impact the January start date, but it did suggest that production would happen later this year, which could mean theHighlanderfilming is still happening.

Reshoots Are Not Always A Good Sign

ThoughHighlanderis a classic that is hard to remake, I was initially optimistic when I heard the reboot would be helmed by action auteur Stahelski. Hearing the most recent production update, however, has me worried about bothBallerinaandHighlander.Ballerinacould go either way, as the reshoots could either be the result of needing to correct subpar content, or they could represent meticulous work on Stahelski’s part. As forHighlander, I fear that the effort to stay on schedule could rush the scripting process. Only time will tell as bothBallerinaandHighlandercontinue their development.
