Summary

Heat 2gets an exciting new update from director Michael Mann, who teases his filming plan. Released in 1995,Heat, which chronicles the showdown between obsessed cop Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and slick bank robber Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), has become one of Mann’s most beloved films. In 2022, Mann and author Meg Gardiner released a follow-up in the form of a sequel/ prequel novel that charts the formation of McCauley’s crew and Shiherlis' escape to South America after their heist goes wrong, and Mann has since expressed his interest in adapting it into aHeat 2movie.

In a video shared byCourtney Howard, Mann, during a recent screening of his 2006 crime thriller,Miami Vice, shares a promising update onHeat 2.

While the project still isn’t quite a sure thing, the filmmaker reveals that he has various filming locations already planned out and thataudiences can expect the film to have a runtime similar to that of the two-hour and fifty-minute original. Check out Mann’s comment below:

“I’m working on the script seven days a week, and it’s large. It’s as large as the original, which was two hours and forty-five minutes. Some of what the characters do is evolved beyond the novel itself, particularly the Christian Hurley character in the fourth part of it, the last act of it.

“So it’s large. And it’s going to go, you know, we would shoot in Paraguay, and shoot that last day where we shot a number of days in [Miami Vice], and it was a very wild place. And then also in Mexicali, in Chicago, in L.A., and then in Southeast Asia. Probably Batam, which is right across from Singapore.”

Heat 2 Seems Likely To Happen

What Else Has Been Said About The Heat Follow-Up

Heat 2is still in the script stage and there’s been no confirmation that it actually has financing yet. Despite this, Mann’s recent comments suggest that he’s quite confident the movie will happen.Mann toldLA Timesearlier this summer thathe plans to start filmingHeat 2either at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. The clock, then, is ticking, and the script would need to be completed in the next few months, in addition to casting and other pre-production work.

Heat 2casting rumorshave pegged Adam Driver as a top choice for a young McCauley, while actor Austin Butler is reportedly being eyed to play a young Chris Shiherlis, the role played by Val Kilmer in the original. So far, casting has not been confirmed, but firearms expert and instructorTaran Butler recently toldCorridor Crewthat he trained Butler for his audition. “I don’t see them going with anybody else,” he told the YouTube channel.

Addressing hisHeat 2casting rumors,Butler toldTotal Filmin May: “I love the first film, but no comment on that.”

Austin Butler’s Upcoming Crime-Thriller Can Be Even Bigger For Him Than Rumored Heat 2 Role

Austin Butler’s City On Fire role is bigger than Heat 2’s role as it means he could lead the movie adaptation franchise of Don Winslow’s book trilogy.

Despite these promising signs, there’s still reason to approachHeat 2with some skepticism due to Mann’s recent films.2023’sFerrarireviewsmay have been positive, but that film was a box office failure, as was his divisive 2015 crime thriller,Black Hat. Still, though, the originalHeathas only become a more beloved film with age, and its this response from audiences that could help to makeHeat 2a reality.
