AlthoughGhostsseason 4 hasn’t explained how its shocking Jay twist will work yet, the CBS sitcom may use a new character to facilitate this change.Ghostsseasons 1-3 saw the CBS sitcom follow the same basic premise as the BBC series of the same name from 2019. After a young couple, Sam and Jay, inherit a mansion from a distant relative, Sam suffers a near-fatal accident and gains the ability to talk to the ghosts occupying their new home. Theghosts of CBS’sGhostsare different from their British counterparts, but the central conceit remains the same.

Ghosts Season 4’s Returning Character Can Revive A Forgotten Thor Storyline

Ghosts season 4 promises to bring back a recurring character who brings out another side of Thor, even though season 3 forgot about this hero.

However, theupcomingGhostsseason 4promises to change this. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the show’s creators revealed that Jay will be able to see the house’s ghosts inGhostsseason 4. The creators didn’t explain how this change would come about or if it would be permanent, but it would represent a major shift for the show. After three seasons of Sam acting as a mediator between the ghosts and her partner, Jay will now be able to communicate directly with the spirits. One fan theory even explains how this will happen.

Ghosts Season 4’s Patience Has An “Intense” Power

Patience the Puritan’s Power Could Be Anything

According to one fan theory,Ghostsseason 4’s new character Patience the Puritancould be the key to Jay’s new ability. Patience was first introduced in season 3 when Flower mentioned her presence in the well where she was trapped, and she first appeared onscreen in the season 3 finale. After Isaac called off his wedding, he was kidnapped by this creepy, previosuly unseen ghost. Patience will be played byHappiest Season’s Mary Holland inGhostsseason 4, and she may play a part in Jay’s arc during the outing. One major behind-the-scenes hint makes this seem more likely.

Patience displayed a lot of power when she pulled Isaac through a wall to kidnap him.

Richie Moriarty, who plays Pete on the sitcom, toldTVLinethat Patience boasts an “Intense power” that leaves everyone in the house “A little bit terrified.” Already, Patience displayed a lot of power when she pulled Isaac through a wall to kidnap him in the season 3 finale. However,Ghostsseason 4’s upcoming changesmay reveal that she has much bigger unforeseen powers.Patience might be the one who enables Jay to see ghosts inGhostsseason 4, since this twist would solve two problems at once. It would both ingratiate her with the mansion’s inhabitants and justify Jay’s big change.

Patience’s New Role May Explain How Jay Sees Season 4’s Ghosts

There needs to be a good explanation for Jay’s ability to see ghosts, since Sam’s ability was achieved via a technicality (as she was, medically speaking, briefly dead after her accident). As such, Patience’s arrival to the show’s cast coming at the same time that Jay gains these powers may not be a coincidence. Patience giving others the ability to see/speak to the dead/ghosts would be equally scary and intense for both parties, as it took the ghosts a while to adjust to Sam, and it would take Jay a lot of time to process the change.

AlthoughGhostshinted that Jay wanted Sam’s powersway back in season 2, this was an idle comment made by a character who didn’t think he would ever get his wish.Jay may regret wishing he could see ghosts inGhostsseason 4and the ghosts could reasonably be intimidated by Patience’s abilities. Although all the ghosts have minor powers, from moving small objects to being able to still create a noxious smell, none of them can do anything as intense as making living people see the dead. This twist might also explain howGhostsseason 4 drops this plot.

This Ghosts Theory Would Avoid A Problem With Season 4’s Jay Twist

Patience’s Presence Could Allow Ghosts Season 4 To Reverse This Change

Much likeGhostscrossing over with the original British show, the CBS sitcom granting Jay the ability to see the dead only seems like a perfect idea. In reality, it could get old quickly if both Sam and Jay could talk to the ghosts for good. After all, many of the show’s comedic misunderstandings hinge on Jay’s well-meaning cluelessness. Classic plots like Sam getting stuck in a safe and the ghost attempting to inform Jay wouldn’t work if he could talk to them all the time, so his powers shouldn’t be permanent. This way, season 4 doesn’t need to changeGhosts.

Ghostsseasons 1-3 updated the British sitcom’s premise by making the flightier, more impulsive member of the central couple the one who can see ghosts.

If Jay could only speak to/see the ghosts when Patience is using her powers, this would allow the show to provide Patience with a purpose beyond her villainous introduction. At the same time, it would signal that the central premise of the series remains the same and Jay would not simply become a male equivalent of Sam.Ghostsseasons 1-3 updated the British sitcom’s premise by making the flightier, more impulsive member of the central couple the one who can see ghosts. Jay permanently sharing this ability would dilute this clever, subversive twist and make the show less unpredictable.

Jay’s Plot Could Simply Copy Sam’s Ghosts Season 1 Story

It is entirely possible that Jay’s season 4 storyline will have nothing to do with Patience and her powers, but this would be even more far-fetched than a ghost with the ability to make the living see other ghosts. After all, the only way that other characters inGhostshave gained the ability to see ghosts is through near-death experiences or death itself.Ghostsseason 4 can’t kill off Jay, since this would be way too bleak a twist for the warm, cozy sitcom. As such, the only other canonically established option would be for Jay to suffer the same fate as Sam.

Ghostsseason 4 premieres on Thursday, October 17, on CBS.

The odds that Jay would temporarily end up clinically dead only a few years after this fate befell his wife is a little too ludicrous to make sense. This coincidence, even within the sitcom’s heightened reality, would stretch credulity and feel forced. As such,Ghostsseason 4 needsPatience’s powers to justify Jay’s twist. The other problem with repeating Sam’s origin story is that this would permanently allow Jay to see ghosts, thus altering the show’s premise for good. IfGhostsseason 4 hopes to allow Jay to see ghosts only temporarily, the sitcom requires Patience’s powers to faciliatate this twist.
