Now that theGhostsfranchise is doubling in size, it is clearer than ever that the CBS sitcom could pull off a wild crossover event. The ghosts of CBS’sGhostsare the real heroes of the show, as was the case in its British inspiration of the same name. Both comedy shows get a lot of laughs from their human heroes, but it is the varied range of mismatched ghosts that anchors the show’s action and comedy. Unfortunately, it has historically been tough to see how the ghosts from both versions of the show could ever meet onscreen.

Ghosts Season 4’s New Character Sets Up An Unexpected Redemption Arc

Ghosts season 4’s first trailer seems to set up an overdue redemption arc for one inhabitant of the Woodstone B&B who truly needed to change.

While the human characters of the US and UK versions ofGhostscould meet easily enough, the ghosts themselves present a problem. AlthoughGhostsseason 4may change this, the lore of both shows currently states that most ghosts can’t leave the site where they died. Although Pete has displayed this ability a few times, it would be impossible to see how the sitcom could justify a whole group of ghosts crossing the Atlantic. Ironically, the possibility of a crossover became brighter after an announcement about the franchise’s future. The series is going global, meaning the ghosts ofGhostsmight follow suit.

The Ghosts Franchise Is Expanding With New International Version Of The Series

Both Australia and Germany Are Getting Their Own Versions Of Ghosts

Both Australia and Germany are receiving their ownGhostsspinoffsin the near future. In June 2024,BBC Studios Germany, WDR, and ARD Mediathek announced that Germany’sGhostsspinoff would focus on Emma and Felix, a couple who inherit a mansion inhabited by ghosts who Emma gains the ability to see and communicate with after a near-death experience. Meanwhile, BBC Australia is working on a version of the show starring Kate and Sean, another couple inheriting another lavish manor filled with a rogue’s gallery of spirits.

WhileGhostsseason 4’s new backstory revealswill deepen the lore of the US show, these new series will expand the world ofGhostsas a franchise. Both the German and Australian versions of the sitcom are replicating the premise verbatim, much like the CBS show did when adapting the BBC original. While this might sound like imitation, it means that the franchise can now crossover in a way that previously seemed impossible. Since every version ofGhostsis so similar, the show’s four different incarnations can justify a special event where the main characters finally meet.

Ghosts' Expanding Universe Makes It Easier To Justify A Crossover

The Silliness Of A Ghosts Crossover Works Better With Extra Spinoffs

When asked about the prospect of a crossover between the US and UK versions of the show,Ghostsco-showrunner Joe Port toldTVLinethat he wasn’t sure about the idea. Initially, acrossover between the UK and USGhostsseemed silly because of how similar the stories of Sam and Jay and Allison and Mike were, with even the ghosts inhabiting their homes sharing a lot of overlap. WhileGhostsseason 4’s Hetty storymight expand her origins, she is undeniably similar to Fanny from the BBC show. Similarly, Pete and Pat died in the exact same manner.

If the German, Australian, American, and British versions ofGhostsall overlapped, then the characters could point out just how unlikely their shared fate is.

Port said that the thought of Allison and Mike meeting Sam and Jay “Feels kind of strange,” and it is easy to see why given these similarities. However, while two sets of characters who experienced the same absurd circumstances might stretch credulity, four of them meeting up would point to a pattern or some sort of explanation. If the German, Australian, American, and British versions ofGhostsall overlapped, then the characters could point out just how unlikely their shared fate is and get to the bottom of why they all seem to have so many similarities.

A Crossover is The Best Way To Celebrate Ghosts Expanding Its Universe

All Four Versions Of Ghosts Could Overlap

In a clever meta twist, all four versions ofGhostscould explicitly address their similarities in a crossover. Much likeGhostsseason 4’s new characterscan bring new powers to the show and use these to facilitate unexpected twists, the various versions ofGhostscrossing over would inevitably lead to the characters realizing parts of their fates they share. Trevor and Julian could both be struck by the unlikely coincidence that they died with their pants down, while Pete and Pat could bond over the tragic, although darkly funny, circumstances of their deaths.

Ghostsseason 4 premieres on August 18, 2025, on CBS.

The four versions ofGhostsmake it paradoxically easy for the shows to crossover with each other, since the crossover could center on the weird, unlikely thought that all four shows exist in the same universe. Meanwhile, the Australian and German shows can also highlight differences between each country’s version of events. If these upcoming shows also have a scoutmaster who died via an arrow to the neck, this could prove that the characters have a previously unseen link between them. Alternatively, if the new versions ofGhostscould prove Pete and Pat’s similarities are mere coincidence.
