Summary
Francis Ford Coppolaspeaks about what his next directorial plans are followingMegalopolis. Coppola has been a director since the 1960s, making his first feature in 1962 withThe Bellboy and the Playgirls. Since then, he hasbecome one of the most celebrated directors of his generation, directingThe GodfatherandApocalypseNow. This year, he is coming out with thedystopian fantasyMegalopolis, which tells the story of an architect who tries to construct a utopian version of New York City following a disaster.
Speaking withRolling Stone, the director reveals whether he will keep directing afterMegalopolis. The director was asked whether he was planning to retire, and the answer was a clear “no.” Rather,Coppola is at work on “two potential projects"including a drama set in England. The other project is titledDistant Visionand would chronicle “three generations of an Italian American family” much like the director’s own family. He would plan to finance that project with “whatever Megalopolis does.” Check out the full quote from Coppola below:

No, I’m working on two potential projects right now. One is a regular sort of movie that I’d like someone to finance and make in England, because I don’t have a big history with my wife in England. Everywhere else I go, I’m reminded of her all the time. The other is calledDistant Vision, which is the story of three generations of an Italian American family like mine, but fictionalized, during which the phenomenon of television was invented. I would finance it with whateverMegalopolisdoes. I’ll want to do another roll of the dice with that one.
Megalopolis May Not Make Enough Money To Profit
It is fascinating to hear the director talk about self-financing yet another project withDistant Vision. Coppola has a long and storied career, which has led to speculation he may retire, which he denies. Coppola self-financedMegalopolis, and what resulted was an expansion of the budget, production problems with some members of the crew quitting, and difficulty finding distribution even after premiering at Cannes. In total,Megalopolisis reported to have cost around $120 million, with Coppola reportedly selling some of his wineries to establish a line of credit.
Coppola is also hopeful thatMegalopoliswill profit when it hits theaters at the end of September. The $120 million budget makes it such that the film will likely have to make around $300 million or more to break even and then turn a profit. Given the movie is coming from one of the most acclaimed directors of all time, and for a film that is getting an IMAX release, the movie could very well be profitable. However, with the controversy surroundingMegalopolis, that total might be hard to come by.
