DC Comics is honoring almost a century of comic book history with its newly-announced series,New History of the DC Universe. The four-issue miniseries unites DC superfan Mark Waid with a rotating lineup of talented artists like Todd Nauck and Jerry Ordway (who join Waid for the first issue).

The comic is billed asa “fresh look at the past and present of the DC Universe” from the perspective of Barry Allen, aka the Flash. The first chapter will revisit theGolden Age of Comic Booksand re-examine the rise of the Justice Society as well as other classic heroes.

It’s hard to believe, but the comic book universe that continues to entertain fans with the adventures of heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman has been going on for almost 100 years. Ever since Superman burst onto the comic book scene, the universe has grown into one of the most recognizable franchises in the entire world. Things have obviously changed in the last several decades, from small retcons, to giant line-wide reboots likeCrisis on Infinite Earths. But through it all,the DC Universe has survived and while its continuity periodically shifts, its history continues to unfoldwith new adventures.

DC Comics is going all-out withNew History of the DC Universe. Mark Waid is one of the biggest DC fans alive and he’s spent a great part of his life helping build some of the DCU’s best stories. Not to mention, the publisher has got Todd Nauck and Jerry Ordway onboard for the first issue, both of whom have worked on many classic stories. Beyond the attached talents, it’s great thatfans will finally have a modern resource that clarifies what is, and isn’t, DC canon.

While DC Comics has been firing on all cylinders in the last few months, things have been a little tricky continuity wise. After the events ofDark Nights: Death MetalandDark Crisis on Infinite Earths, most creators have taken a looser approach to continuity with the idea that everything is canon in one way or another. It’s not a bad idea, but to really go forward, the DC Universe needs a foundation to build upon.New History of the DC Universeisn’t just a chance to celebrate decades of DC Comics, but something that builds towards the future.

While the details are few for now, it’s great to see DC Comics taking this project seriously by bringing in talented and knowledgeable creators who can give fans both old and new appreciation for DC history. It’ll take some time to get here, but this upcoming project could be vital in taking theDC Universeinto its next great era.
