A fatal bug surrounding in-app purchases has forced Square Enix to shut down the iOS version ofFinal Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.The remaster of the spinoffFFtitle was released in 2020, when it became available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and mobile devices. Now, it seems the iOS players will not be able to access the game anymore thanks to a coding issue originating from an update made by Apple, according to Square Enix’s explanation.
According to a blog on theFinal Fantasywebsite (originally spotted byThe Verge), the company had been receiving player reports starting on January 24 from people making in-app purchases but not receiving their items. As a result,Square Enix has decided to delistFF Crystal Chroniclesfrom the iOS storeand is offering refunds for eligible players who request them.

According to Square Enix, the bug affecting theCrystal Chroniclesremasterwas caused by changes made by Apple to the way in-app purchases work. After attempting to reshape the way the game works around these changes, Square Enix is “unable to completely fix the bug and implement the new changes, making it unlikely to resume service for the game.” As a result,the game has been removed from the iOS App Store and will no longer be available for download or purchase.

A new bit of information confirms that the rumored, long-awaited FF9 remake is still in the works, but it could be a while before it hits our screens.
Players who made in-app purchases in January 2024 or later can request a refund. Refunds will only be made for the following items:

Chime’s Crystal
Memory Crystal Pack
Unfortunately, it seems that Square Enix is not planning to reimburse any players who made purchases prior to January 2024. The company will continue toprocess refund requests through July 27, 2025.

Lucky for fans, the bug is only affecting iOS versions ofCrystal Chronicles,and the game continues to be available on other platforms. Unfortunately for newer players, the removal of the game from the iOS store means anyone who had started the game but didn’t purchase all the dungeons will not get to complete their game.
