Warning: SPOILERS for Dragon Ball DAIMA episode #1

Dragon Ball DAIMAis already exciting viewers thanks to Toei Animation’s loving care for the source material and Akira Toriyama’s key contributions before his passing, addressing long-standing fan questions. When the Majin Buu Saga rolled around, entirely new questions began to arise due to the emergence of the Fusion Dance, Potara Fusions, and the magical Majin race. While these factors interacted inDragon Ball Z,Dragon Ball DAIMAepisode #1 addressesMajin Buu’s newly confirmed ability to separate Potara Fusionsinto their original entities.

Majin Buu’s innocent form was given a new chance after splitting away from his evil qualities, creating an adorable yet still strong addition to the roster entering theDragon Ball Zepilogue. However, his entry into the series introduced many fascinating abilities and characteristics that were not fully explored, with new revelations seemingly still emerging. InDragon Ball DAIMA, Buu’s latest confirmed ability explains what happened to Vegito inDragon Ball Zepisode #273while addressing a continuity error about Kibito Kai acrosstheDragon Balltimeline.

New Ability Erases a Continuity Error in Dragon Ball Daima

InDragon Ball Daimaepisode #1, Kibito and Supreme Kai Shin celebrate Trunks' ninth birthday, with Goku asking how they were separated despite the Potara Fusion seemingly permanent. As Shin explains, this was inspired by how Vegito was consumed by Buu, where after he lowered his guard, he was separated back into Goku and Vegeta; Kibito Kai approached Buu to do the same. Buu confirms, saying, “When I inhaled them and spit them out, they were separated.” This is due toBuu’s internal gases being able to separate Potara Fusions in Dragon Ball.

Why Goku Shrunk In Dragon Ball Daima Explained

Dragon Ball Daima is the newest addition to Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball canon, and with the first episode a burning fan question is already answered.

Akira Toriyama has taken this to varying extremes in the franchise, such as in one particular moment between Goku and Krillin, resulting inone of the best quotes inDragon Ball. In the middle of his fight against Bacterian, Krillin finds his opponent’s stench debilitating, to which Goku responds by pointing out that Krillin doesn’t have a nose;the Majin Buu physiology moment is a similar retcon to explain a plot hole in the series. However, this could also be explained as Toriyama writing his creations out of creative corners, once claiming Krillin could breathe through his skin.

Vegito and Kibito Kai’s Separations Are Explained in Dragon Ball Daima

Hopefully, the Fandom Isn’t Split on This Change

Vegito was introduced as the Potara fusion of Goku and Vegeta, the only one who could fight and defeat Buu. However, to free his friends who had been eaten by the villain, Vegito let himself get consumed by the Super Buu variant. Once inside, the fusion ends, despite the fact that the Potara version had no time limit. The series explains it away quickly as an effect of the miasma inside Buu’s body, in classic Toriyama fashion, and nowDAIMAhas confirmed that the creature has indeed this power.

Perhaps the greater inconsistency addressed by this retcon is Kibito Kai,whose fused state is varied betweenDragon Ball Superarcs, namely the Golden Frieza Saga and God of Destruction Beerus Saga. As addressed inDragon Ball DAIMAepisode #1, Kibito and Shin confirm that they willingly approached Majin Buu to eat and separate them once more.

This lends flexibility to an otherwise rigid technique inDragon Ball, with Vegito’s fusion not being permanent only because it’s done by characters who aren’t Supreme Kais, as it was explained later inDragon Ball Super. InDragon Ball DAIMA, this indicates that Shin will have a greater presence, especially with the promotional art featuring him and Goku. It’ll be fascinating to see whetherDragon Ball DAIMAdiscusses other moments inDragon Balllore in future episodes and how it’ll affect fans' perception of the series in the future.
