Summary
Disneyplanned to add an exciting princess project to its catalog, anddespite its cancelation, it’s too promising to not become a movie.Disney has been producing princess moviessinceSnow White and the Seven Dwarfsin 1937, and the studio haschanged its approach to its heroinesover time. Disney planned to bring them all together for an animated short calledPrincess Academy, which would have been a huge deal for the studio. Sadly, despite such a promising premise, the project never came to fruition.
According to David Kawena, who was meant to direct the project, its cancelation was due to the fact that “the Disney Animation hand-drawn studios closed its doors” (viaThe Daily Dot). As a result, many of Disney’s 2D animators lost their jobs, with digital animation replacing the more traditional style of Disney’s films and shows. It’s a shame that this is the reasonPrincess Academynever happened, as there’s probably demand for such a crossover. It feels too promising to forget about entirely. Hopefully, Disney will revisit it down the line.

10 Disney Princess Movies That Will Never See The Light Of Day
Disney has canceled some potentially interesting princess movies over the years, including Rose-Red, Swan Lake, and the ambitious Princess Academy.
Disney’s Canceled Princess Academy Project Is Too Promising To Just Forget About
Princess Academy Would’ve Been A Revolutionary Disney Crossover.
Disney’sPrincess Academy,is too promising to be forgotten, as the canceled short would have brought its princesses together in one place and offered the chance for many unexplored character dynamics. It would’ve bridged the gap between movies and franchises, making it a fantastically ambitious addition to the studio’s lineup. APrincess Academymovie makes sense, as there arecurrently 13 Disney princesses. There are plenty of story opportunities and songs to be written for each one. Even if resurrecting it may be a challenge for Disney, it would be worth it.

In terms of the musical elements,Princess Academywould make an amazing crossover musically, asthe princesses' singing voices all sound so different. Disney composer Alan Menken was on board to write the music for the project. With his extensive experience from Disney princess movies likeThe Little MermaidandAladdin,he could have created scores that complemented the princesses' voices and helped them harmonize during their songs. This alone makes a strong case for reviving the project as a movie crossover.
Disney Should Revive Its Ambitious Princess Crossover
In Ralph Breaks The Internet There’s A Crossover Because The Disney Princesses Are At A Sleepover
Disney should bring back its ambitious princess crossoverbecause the studio has done successful — albeit smaller — crossovers in the past. InRalph Breaks the Internet, there is a scene where Vanellope meets the princesses during a sleepover, and she befriends them. In this scene, the dynamic of the princesses works well because they bounce off each other. It establishes in some canon form that they are friends, highlighting the potential that a short or full movie throwing them together could have.
Disney’s biggest worry with revivingPrincess Academywould be deciding on the animation style. In the sleepover scene, the animation is more modern compared to the early days of the computer-animated Disney princess movies. However, the demand for a princess crossover could outweigh the concerns about making aPrincess Academymoviebecause, commercially, it could make a lot of money at the box office as a feature film rather than a short.

Princess Academy Would Work Better As A Movie Than A Short
Princess Academy Would Be Like The Disney Princesses' Version Of The Avengers.
There are many beloved Disney princesses, andPrincess Academycould be the Disney princesses' version ofThe Avengers.Like Marvel’s heroes, eachDisney princess has a power or strength specific to them, which is why having them work together inPrincess Academymakes so much sense. The princesses' powers, like Rapunzel’s healing hair and Mulan’s warrior skills, would be even more fascinating to see put together. And with so many diehard Disney fans keeping up with all the movies, such a crossover shouldn’t be out of the question. The studio’s leading ladies could also come together to fight some new evil.
ADisneyprincess crossover movie doesn’t have to be about the cliché conflict of good versus evil, either.Princess Academycould still be made with its original premise ifDisney wanted to make it, just in a newer, 3D-animated style. This could be time-consuming, but because of the love that the princesses get from Disney’s audiences, not makingPrincess Academyfeels like a waste of planning and concept art. Unfortunately,Princess Academyremains onDisney’s canceled project list, but there’s still hope that it might one day make a triumphant comeback.
