Disney+has introduced a Top 10 list, and it is packed with Halloween titles ahead of the holiday. The Disney streaming service was originally launched in November 2019, seemingly benefitting, unintentionally, from the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down movie theaters in early 2020, causing even more audiences to turn to at-home streaming for entertainment.

There are quite a few originalDisney+ moviesand TV shows. The majority of these titles are in some way related to their most popular IP, including multiple series and miniseries set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and theStar Warsfranchise. However, the streaming platform also featuresan extensive library of titles from various companies owned by Disney, including Pixar, National Geographic, Hulu, and 20th Century Studios. In March 2022, the library was expanded even further to include mature content due to an updated parental control function.

Kiff: The Haunting of Ms. McGravy’s House(2024)

At the time of writing, the first Top 10 list in the United States (without any parental restrictions) isdominated by horror-comedies and Halloween-themed titles, with all but one movie landing in those categories (a roster that includes theMarvel showAgatha All Along, which isn’t directly related to Halloween but is timed to coincide with the holiday because of its witch protagonists and eerie atmosphere). The one exception is 2018’sVenom, which is likely charting because its second sequel,Venom: The Last Dance, is currently in theaters.

What This Means For Disney+

The Platform’s Older Titles May Have A Shot At Chart Performance

It is hardly surprising that theHocus PocusandHalloweentownmoviesare charting on the day before Halloween, considering how many viewers rewatch those movies seasonally. However, the firstDisney+Top 10 list highlights how much their popular content isa mix of new releases and older titles from their library. It remains to be seen if this is still the case once the holiday has ended and the list reflects a cleaner slate of titles, but it seems highly likely that the proportion of old and new could remain the same even without Halloween influencing viewers' choices.
