In Marvel andDC Comics, it’s not uncommon to see eerily similar characters running around their respective fictional universes who take after one another in ways that would make a copyright lawyer cringe, with Marvel’sKraven the Hunterbeing a popular Spider-Man creation that DC sneakily adapted for their own comic universe decades ago.Going by the name of Adam Orion, this skilled hunter/tracker is a direct riff on Kravenand, compared to his Marvel counterpart, is a villain few even knew existed.
Introduced in 1973’sSuperboy #199in a backup tale titled “From the Files of the Legion of Super-Heroes: The Impossible Target,”Adam Orion, or as he’s villainously known as the Hunter, is the son of Otto Orion, the original Hunter, and is essentiallyKraven the Hunterin all but (first) name.

Tied to the 30th century-based team known asthe Legion of Super-Heroes, both Adam Orion and his father are billed as the galaxy’s most dangerous hunters and have stalked the Legion of Super-Heroes on multiple occasions, with Adam swearing revenge after blaming them for his father’s untimely demise.
DC’s Adam Orion Is a Future-Set Space-Faring Version of Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter
Superboy #199- 1973 (Cary Bates and Dave Cockrum)
Hailing from the planet of Simballi, Adam Orion is an obvious attempt by DC to createtheir own version of Kraventen yearsafterthe character debuted over at Marvel.Having a characterization, skillset, and near identical hunter/tracker design that similarly sees Adam wear various animal hides and animal-themed clothing, Adam also sports an oddly familiar fur-covered vest and an impressive mustache— visual accents which only further the Kraven resemblances. Having long red hair and debuting wearing an eyepatch, Adam also carries a Kraven-esque hunting knife and rifle but also utilizes advanced tech like “gravitor-boots” and a one-man hovercraft.
Spider-Man Cosplay Perfectly Recreates His Most Brutal Loss to Kraven
Spider-Man and Kraven have been enemies for decades, with a new cosplay image killing Spidey off, inspired by the pair’s brutal “Grim Hunt” story arc.
Not possessing any true superpowers himself,Adam relies on his wits, unmatched hunting and tracking skills, 30th-century gear, and traditional poaching weapons to take down his prey, unlike Kraven, who receives superhuman abilities whenever he ingests his special concoction of jungle herbs, giving him enhanced strength, speed, agility, and heightened senses. Nowhere near as prominent nor multi-layered a character as Kraven was by the time he perished in theiconic Spider-Man story “Kraven’s Last Hunt,”Adam’s quest to honor his late father was as much character development as he received, making him a rarely used Marvel-inspired villain better left forgotten.

Adam Orion’s the Hunter Persona Posesses No Super Abilities Like What Kraven Has Access To
Kraven Was Introduced in 1964
Making barely a dozen appearances since his debut over five decades ago,it’s doubtful that Adam will make any more in the foreseeable future, with him last seen in the Legion of Super-Heroes’ 2011 comic series, where he was imbued with a sliver of real superpowers allowing him to control fauna, only to be easily knocked out by the Legionnaire Tyroc soon after.Kraven the Hunteris a Marvel character whose presence is still felt in Spider-Man comics today but when it comes toDC Comics’Adam Orion, the Legion of Super-Heroes have far more important matters to attend to.
