15 Movies & TV Shows Like Apple TV+’s Dark Matter
If you enjoyed watching the new Apple TV+ series, Dark Matter, there are many other great movies and TV shows about parallel universes.
Jason, Daniela & Charlie Dessen Could Set Up A New Life In The Futuristic Chicago Universe
This Dark Matter reality could have caused Charlie Dessen’s reaction at the end of season 1
At the end ofDark Matterseason 1, episode 9, “Entanglement,” Joel Edgerton’s Jason Dessen steps into what is presumably his family’s new home universe. The look on Daniela and Charlie’s faces is one of sheer amazement, and very few universes of the ones shown so far illicit this response. However, the Futuristic Chicago is one of the rare realities that’s awe-inspiring rather than terrifyingor just not that different from our own. Jason had already visited this universe, so the fact he’s more interested in monitoring Charlie’s reaction in “Entanglement” rather than what’s outside the door makes perfect sense.
This version of Chicago isn’t actually in the future. Instead, the reality in which it exists has developed differently to give that illusion.

Even if the universe the Dessens step into at the end of “Entanglement” isn’t the Futuristic Chicago, it could still become their eventual home. There’s currently very little information on how and when the story will pick up. If there’s a time jump between seasons 1 and 2, thenit could be that the Dessen family tried a few different universesbefore picking one to settle down in. With so many options and such a variety of potential errors, this is a very real possibility. That being said, the Futuristic Chicago makes the most sense from a narrative perspective.
Jason Returning To The Futuristic Chicago Sets Up Awkward Encounters With Ryan Holder & Amanda Lucas
Jason’s Daniela could have an uncomfortable conversation with Amanda
There are already at least two confirmed familiar faces living inDark Matter’s Futuristic universe. Jimmi Simpson’s Ryan Holder - the version from Jason’s original reality - was stranded there by Jason2 in season 1.Alice Braga’s Amanda Lucas chose to remain there rather than hinder Jason’s journey home, but she seems very settled during her surprise meeting with Ryan at the end ofDark Matterseason 1. Both of these characters encountering Jason Dessen again could make for some thoroughly enrapturing storylines.
From Ryan’s perspective, it was the story’s “main” Jason who dumped him in his new version of what he’s been forced to call home.

From Ryan’s perspective, it was the story’s “main” Jason who dumped him in his new version of what he’s been forced to call home. While it was Jason2, this could be a difficult thing to explain given that Jason and his multiversal copy share the same face, voice, and even large parts of their past. Amanda’s reunion with Jason could be similarly uncomfortable but for different reasons.
Dark Matter Season 2 Must Answer A Confusing Lore Question The Book Also Ignored
Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter novel skipped over important canon clarifications, which he also repeated as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation.
Jason and Amanda grew very close as they traversed the multiverse together, with the pair coming very close to abandoning their journey and settling down together. When they finally decided to part, their feelings for each other were made very clear with a farewell kiss that went beyond Platonic. In a story rife with rhetoric about living with past decisions, Jason’s potential encounter with Amanda while his wife stands alongside him could cause some serious romantic tensions.

Dark Matter Season 2 Can Finally Answer The Mystery Of Where The Dessens End Up
Blake Crouch’s original novel also omits where the Dessens go
Other than the side characters' various sub-plots, which were introduced for the Apple TV+ adaptation, theDark Mattershow ends in very much the same way as the book. The source material never fully reveals where the Dessens travel to when they step into the Box. A short description is supplied, and while it doesn’t particularly line up with how the Futuristic Chicago is portrayed, it doesn’t exactly rule it out completely, either.
“Rising, I pull Daniela onto her feet, and we walk over to our son as the cold, sterile vacuum of the corridor fills with warmth and light. A wind through the door carries the scent of wet earth and unknown flowers. A world just after a storm.”
This intentional vagueness never resulted in a second book being penned, which suggestsCrouch initially wanted to leave what happened next to the reader’s imagination. Since then, it appears the author/showrunner has changed his mind, and Apple TV+ is giving him the chance to finally show where the Dessens went and what they did after the events of the originalDark Matterbook.
